i was just wondering if anybody has ever tried to grow hanging ivy into a fish tank, will it work and is it okay with the fish i just thought if it is possible it would look neat in the tank?

I had ivy planted around my pond when it was in the shade. The ivy grew over the edge of the pond and had roots down into the water. It looked awesome. The only problem was, any of the leaves that were water level (or just above) got eaten by my goldies. It was regular houseplant "tropical foliage" ivy from WalMart. I don't know how the leaves would do under water, but it would do fine rooted in, say, the filter as long as it got plenty of light.

The leaves will eventually die under water but they are awesome with just the root systems in the water. The fish love the roots. I have also put them into the filter.

I have tried those effects and they are really nice looking...I always fail....be sure what is not in the tank gets good lighting too. I did the willow rooting thing...was wonderful but the tops finally ceased.....just want to add another lighting thing.

The above link to pothos might help you a bit. So easy to care for and root. The leaves have to stay above water though and would do well in a hang on back (HOB) filter. Keep your eye on it though so that it doesn't start growing around the impeller area. It will vine like crazy!
Good luck!

Pothos is great for inside since it has such low light requirements. Just don't let any puppies or kitties munch on it, since it can be toxic.

when you say root into the filter , do you mean the spong media in the filter, wouldnt that be hard to clean?

This is Lizards tail I brought in out of the pond. the roots hang down in the tank and the fish love them as well as the cover on the water. I have a two bulb hanging shop light over that tank.

When I put them in the filter I just stick pieces in the filter. You usually rinse your filter media often enough the roots don't tangle with the filter media.
