Strong Current and Cherry Barbs

Hi everyone..This is my first post although I have been following the forum for some time now….I am looking to add 5-6 cherry barbs to my tank but I read on another forum that they might not handle the fairly strong current that I have in my setup.

I have a 38 gallon tank with a 3 inch airstone and a Penguin 200 filter. I believe the combination of the two and the configuration I have set up causes a bit of current. The 5 black neon tetras I have in there right now seem to actually enjoy the current, but I want to make sure the cherry barbs would do alright as well.

Also, is there any conflict between the black neons and the cherry barbs?

Thanks so much!

Steve

hi steve, welcome to fishlore! i have cherry barbs in my tank and they are fine with a bit of a current. when mine were a lot smaller it was a bit of a chalenge for them to get past the current but once they grew a little it became no problem for them.

cherry barbs are VERY peaceful fish and IMO wont be aggresive to any of your fish (though if they are males they may chase each other when they do there "dance" to see who is the alpha male). im not sure if black neons are aggresive or not but i think the cherry barbs will stay out of there way.

im surre someone else knows more about black neons than i do and will be able to help you more with your second question. if you do get cherry barbs i bet you will love them they are awesome fish.

Good luck

Welcome to Fishlore, Steve

I've never had cherry barbs, so I can't advise specifically, but if you're worried about the flow, you can always put an aquarium sponge around your intake valve. That'll slow it down a bit.

Hope this helps.

Firstly, WELCOME TO FISHLORE!
I agree with Cherrybarbboi, they should do fine in the current and with other fish as long as they can't fit in any of their tankmates' mouth. If your filter's intake current is too strong (fear that they might be sucked into the intake tube), you can do what some members do, cut out a sponge or filter media and wrap it around your intake tube so that it'll lessen the current and also your fish won't get sucked in. If you want to clean the sponge or media, just take it out and rinse with tank water. Hope that helps! Good luck!
