Turning lights off scares Tetras

Hello all

Just wondering are there any ideas on this...when i turn the lights off in my Juwel Vision 180 just before i goto bed the neon tetras go crazy darting around for about 10-15 seconds.

When i still the lights off in tank, i still have main ceiling lights ON so they are not going from bright to complete dark.

What can i do...all the other fish are fine just tetras freak out!

aww poor lil things....only thing I can think of is big leafed plants for security...how new are the fish? eventually they do get use to a routine if the lights are on and off at the same time...having the extra light on the ceiling fan is great!!

well if you want to moderate the light so they dont stress out you could try the moonlight LED strips that way they dont get so stressed from the sudden change in light

Hi Elmo. Do you have any decorations or high leveled plants in your tank? Your tetras can use those for security and to hide so that they wouldn't be in an open space when the lights go out (it scares them). Fish do need some hiding place to 'sleep'

Hope everything works out. Good luck!

Hello Emmett. I thought I'd share my point of view and what I do for my fish concerning lighting. In the morning, I turn on room lights first before the tank lights come on. That way the bright light of the tank isn't such a shock to them.

At night I turn the room lights off first, so all of the room is dark before the tank lights go out. I would like to think that once the fish see the room go dark, they know their tank lights are going off next. It works great for the fish that I have.

Once your fish get into a routine I think everything will be fine.
Best of luck
Ken

hi Emmett .. I have a betta, platys and fry..what I do is turn the tank lights off ..by holding the button for a sec and let it go slowly..so it doesnt make that 'click' sound. I find with them its more the noise then anything else. Then after awhile the room lights and lastly the TV light, lol. Its a process but works for my little guys

Hello, yes i have lots of tall plastic plants, rock and bog wood loads of hiding places.

Ill try the methods mentioned here like turning off the room light 1st and see how i go...

Thanks Aquarist48 and Mare i never thought of the click causing the shock. Must be more gentle as it does make quite a loud click.

Thanks for the advice
