Quick Cycle a new tank from an established tank

Hi,

I know that this topic has been covered heaps, but I can't seem to find an exact answer.

I need to set up a 10 gal tank pretty fast to move some fish. If I was to use gravel from an established tank, and swap the sponge from the new internal filter and use the noodle bag in my Aqua Clear 30 HOB filter, would this significantly aid the cycling process?

Also, would putting the new sponge media into the HOB filter help it grow the beneficial bacteria?

Thanks,

Raff.

Good morning Raff. Gravel from the established tank will be a great help. You can put the gravel in a mesh bag or "never seen soap" nylon hose and place it in the tank. Leave it there for 2 weeks at the very least. Any filter media that you use to seed the tank should at least have been in the established tank for two weeks or more. You can use noodles, sponges, bio tubes, balls, whatever media will fit
Once you do the seeding don't add too many fish at one time or it will over load the cycle with ammonia spikes. Keep an eye on your readings.

Thanks aquarist.

The problem is that I need to move the fish into the new tanks asap. Unfortunately, I received some misinformation on "the relatively peaceful nature" of Jewel Cichlids, and now that they have spawned, I'm worried moreso for my cory.

Any additional information to help ease the transition in the new tank, apart from monitoring ammonia and like 50% Wc to keep levels down?

Thanks again

Hey raff. How many fish are you planning on moving? If you add more than two or three then I would suggest that you be prepared for daily water changes as you said 30 to 50% add some prime or amquel + to detox the ammonia for the 24 hour period until it's time for the next water change. By seeding the tank and should you get an ammonia spike, it shouldn't take as long to cycle.

I'm planning on moving 3 cory, a guppy and some guppy fry. I fully realise that this is not a very favourable situation, I just hope I don't lose any fish.

You could always try using Tetra SafeStart and cycle instantly.

I think I might try this, I was considering it as an option, but I think I might have trouble trying to find some as I haven't seen it around much. Hopefully it will be somewhere nearby, and will help me out. It was going to take approximately a week from the pet store closest by to order in.

I'd agree with jdhef on the Tetra SafeStart. =)
