Questions for a New Tank

Hi everyone after a few weeks of research it's finally time for me to take out the wallet and start buying stuff for my first tank. I think I have a good handle on the technical aspects like the nitrogen cycle but had a few questions. Right now I plan on getting a 29G tank but that could increase depending on the feedback I get.

As far as stocking goes my original plan was 4-5 Zebra Danios (hardy, top level), 5-8 Black Neon Tetras (mid level), 4-5 Sterbai Corys (bottom level). The reason I might go bigger than 29G is I would like to add a Bolivian Ram. Does this seem like a workable set-up? Depending on where I look some places say Rams are better in pairs.

Second I was going to get some small diameter smooth black gravel as a substrate. Would this be ideal for the above configuration? Some of the articles I have read say sand for corrys.

Finally is it worth doing a partially planted tank? I would like to try my hand at live plants but I don't think I am ready for a fully planted tank. With live plants I could add a layer of flourite under the gravel/sand.

Thanks for the help,
Nate

Welcome to FishLore!

Your plan sounds workable. I think a single Ram should be okay, but they are pretty sensitive and it is recommended to add them once the tank has been established for a while.

The substrate should be fine for your cories, as long as it is smooth.

I only have plastic plants, so I can't address that issue at all.

Welcome to fishlore Nate!

Its great that you decided to read up on the nitrogen cycle before you got your tank. There are many knowledgable( sp?) members that will help you along. As for Stocking you sound close to being socked. As far as adding a Bolivian Ram i would wait for some members who have had experience with them to help you along.
Enjoy this great site

Thanks for the quick replies and advice. I will have to try and track down some more information on the Bolivian Rams.

Welcome to Fishlore

Bolivian Rams are wonderful! They have a lot of personality. We have two that have to be kept in separate tanks because one was always chasing and stressing out the other. Definitely add them after your tank is established and they'll color up for you well.
