My guppies spend quite a bit of time near the top as well. Guppies should always be active and swimming around, begging for food, or picking at plants and gravel looking for food.

If they're swimming in place, or not eating, I'd keep a very close eye on them. Do they have any other symptoms?

redlessi, I hope you don't mind, I merged your two threads since they seems to be related.
This will keep everything together for you and make it easier for them members to see what s going on and hopefully be able to give you some help.

Good morning. So hate to hear you're having problems and fish loss. Did you acclimate the guppies before you added them into the tank? My concern here would be pH shock possibly since your readings are normal. Or as mentioned maybe the guppies brought something with them.
Best of luck. I hope the rest of your fish are going to be ok.

Good morning Ken. I wondered that also but she lost a danio first and h was already in the tank.

Yes I acclimated them by floating them for about 1 hour before putting into the tank. The danio was already looking a little funny before I put them in. This morning I had to take another one out of the tank, so I have two in a container. Neither looks good.......

do fish throw up?

I am having major problems with my tank and just noticed one of my fat danios looking like it was throwing up. It looked like it belched out some brown smoky looking stuff

I just did a partial water change because my guppies are dying and 1 danios died on saturday. I have several threads without responses as to what is going on. Need some advise quick

Is your tank cycled?? If not, that could be the culprit. As for the danio throwing up, he could have found some old food, ate it and spat it back out. Sometimes they do that, eat and then spit out..

My tank is already cycled has been up for at least 3 months. My water params 0nitrite, 0 ammonia, 10 nitrates. He looked like he was coughing up smoky brown stuff??

Yes they eat flakes and wafers and shrimp pellets. She was a little lethargic at first but now swimming with everyone else. Just freaked me out seeing it belch up what looked like smoke clouds or something................

Thanks much

it may have been a shrimp pellet or wafer that was too large for her to swallow, happens with my goldfish all the time. They eventually spit it out, sometimes hours later.... by then it's all crumbled, and it floats up through the tank.

my guess is, that's what you saw. I wouldn't worry about it.

That's really weird. Good luck hopefully is just that he ate some old stuff.

btw, what "major problems" are you having with your tank?

tell us what's going on, we'll try to help.

Fish spit out stuff all the time. Either it's poo or some other substance mistaken for food or they literally bit off more food than they can chew. If you see them spit out and then attempt to re-eat the food, the latter is the case.

Assuming your tank is properly cycled, If all your fish are dying there are four typical possibilities:

1. You have a disease rampant in your tank
2. Another fish is killing all its tankmates
3. Insufficient oxygen
4. Your water parameters are not suitable for the particular fish's habitat needs (i.e., fish requiring acidic pH placed in akaline water)

I've merged the threads.
It's best to have one thread for nthe problems you're having so the rest of the members can see what's been going on and what's been suggested.

1 danio died on saturday after looking limp, crooked and lethargic. Added guppies and by yesterday one male looked the same as the danio, I removed from tank and he died shortly after. Then another male did the same thing last night. Today 2 females died the same way. Then the fat danio threw up. Now the remaining fish look fine. Tank has been cycles for at least 3 months with
0 nitrites, 0 ammonia, 10 nitrates, ph 7.0. Maybe a bad batch of guppies but the danio died before they came. I found a nasty fly (must have been there for a while as was fuzzie) stuck on the filter last night and did a partial water change and another one today. I have no idea what happened

you've had quite an ordeal there.

Being you were on vacation and had a friend looking after the fish, honestly, any number of things could've happened in your absence. No offense to your friend, of course, but unless they are experienced fishkeepers, they can unintentionally cause harm totally by accident. Things like overfeeding, or putting their hands in the water without rinsing them first (introducing soap and/or perfume, into the tank, for example)

as for the crooked danio, could there hae been a power outage, or a power surge that caused a jolt to the tank ? ? Is the tank plugged into a groundfaulted outlet ? Even a minor surge can "electrocute" fish, causing the spine to curve. Fish can and do survive, and show a crooked spine/tail. Maybe that's what happened to the danios? You did say that 2 of them were crooked, right? (the guppies were added later, so they wouldn't have been affected)

I wish I could offer more help or advice. I know how frustrating this must be for you, to not know what it is, so you can fix it. One thing though, (and this isn't a lecture) I see how much you care for your fish, so you really should look into getting a small tank to use for quarantine. It really will put your mind at ease in the future, being able to keep the community tank safe when you buy new fish.

sorry I can't be of more help. Hope the remaning fish continue to be fine.

So far so good, I am in the process of moving my goldfish to a 20 gallon and I am going to use the 10 gal for a QT.

Thans again

that sounds like a great plan! Plus, the goldfish will love the 20gallon!

Hmm. Did you have any larger fish that could have bit them? Sorry to hear about your tank. Atleast you can quarintine new arrivals now which will prevent your fish from infecting your main tank if they happen to carry trouble.

I just wanted to thank everyone for their input during my crisis. All of my fish are doing fine. Glad to have my tank back to normal although I never figured out what happened.

Thanks again............

The curved spines may be from deformities, because of the ridiculous amount of inbreeding of these two popular species. My guppies will hang around the top and curve their backs one day and have straight backs for the next couple of days XD I suspect all should be well if your water parameters have always been fine and if your other fishes are fine, it shouldn't be a disease problem... but still keep a constant look out for any other symptoms.

I came home from a 4-day school camp and my golden danio was gone O_O it had a curved spine and had been hanging around limply for weeks. Survived much longer than I thought it would, though I didn't expect it to just disappear... I suspect I'll find its half-eaten carcass, when doing my water change/gravel vacuum this week...

Just curious, redlessi, but where did you get your leopards from? I was also wondering how many you have in your tank.

Sorry about the problems you have had. I have a school of 12 danios now, but I have lost a few in the past shortly after bringing them home. Two died mysteriously within a few days, with no signs of disease or injury. One died, (actually I had to put it to rest) due to a severe mouth injury (probably got too close to the betta that was sharing the tank at the time during feeding time). The two that died mysteriously came from Petco. I no longer buy fish from Petco as their ratio has dipped below 50% survivability. I wondered if maybe you had bought yours from Petco, as they do stock blues, leopards and golds.

The good news is, you've chosen a very hardy and fun species to keep. Whereas most people pass on them as too dull looking, I cannot imagine my tank without them. Twelve danios playing all day long, with 2 gold, 2 blue, 2 leopard and 6 zebras, all long finned, is a constant show.

Now that I think about it, after the danio died from those same symptoms, I may have panicked after seeing the male guppies looking the same way and after 1 of them died I took the rest out of the tank 1 at a time. When I got down to the last 2, I decided to watch them a bit and they were fine. I did not want to risk the whole tank sick, but in hindsight the may have been ok as well.

I did buy them from petco and now I have 5. I really need to find another place to buy my fish from. I dont know what they do to the fish at petco but I have not had much luck with them.

LOL. I do that too. As soon as one of my fish look a little off, I start seeing 'problems' with the other fish... man, I'm paranoid XD

EDIT: oh yeah, I found the danio... it was rotting behind/underneath my plastic plant :/
