| The fishy smell is usually algae, and if you're smelling it, it likely (though not for sure) means that there's algae somewhere that's exposed to air at least some of the time. The lid immediately above the filter output is a likely suspect.
Inside the filter is another possibility.
Not a fan of activated carbon (except when I'm trying to remove something specific, like meds), and my tanks don't smell, so it's not always necessary for a neutral tank smell (though I'm sure there are circumstances that would make it so) |
