Fish Hearing?

When I put my ear up against Bowie's 2.5 gallon MiniBow the Whisper Filter is LOUD as all get out. Do you think it's bothersome to the fish? Does anyone know how well they hear?

IMO they hear or feel very well...music or the vibrations of it, startle my fish..loud footsteps or again, the vibration of it, startles them also...if bowie is acting normal, id say he isnt bothered by the "noise" of his filter tho..something that is more constant and not sudden might also be the case ...either way, they deffinately can hear or feel something with noise

Hi Sharkitty,

I looked up Fish Hearing on google and got quite a few results. But the results are really technical and goes into the anatomy of fish. To give you an example, here's a link to a site.

As far as I know, fish are quite sensitive to vibrations, and can feel them in the water. I don't think fish have very good hearing though, and rely more on touch, and sight. Maybe another member would be a better person to tell you about this because I don't know to much about the subject. Hope I helped though!

I asked Google, too, and also got a lot about anatomy but without much practical information. Off to read MizR's link. Thanks, guys!
