HELP My new oscar is dying...

He's not very active, I found him twice being sucked by the filter... I just got him, left him in the bag and put him in the water for 30. let him out he was fine.. He was swimming okay.. But now he's on his side... HELP... What should I do

Is he in a ten gallon with the two parrots that I see in your aquarium info? An oscar won't survive long in a ten gallon anyway. Your info says you are not familiar with the nitrogen cycle so I would advise you to read up on that. Do you know what your water parameters are? ammonia? Nitrites? Nitrates?

Perhaps you could see if you can return him tomorrow.

most oscars when stressed will lay on there sides. but from the post above, what size tank he in? you should really read up on your nitrogen cycle. and buy a API master test kit, that way you can tell us what you ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate readings are in your tank.

Good morning Simon. Sue gave you a great link for the Nitrogen Cycle. According to your aquarium information you've just started your tank and added fish immediately. Is this correct?
Did you cycle your tank in advance? If so please tell us how.
The more information you can give us the more members will be able to help as mentioned above.
I hope your Oscar is going to be ok. We'll help you all we can.

Sounds like you have really cool fish, but I'm afraid your 55 will be quite crowded with the 2 King Kong parrots and the oscar. If you could upgrade to a 90 gallon, that would be good, but a 120 or so would be even better.

Eventually I will upgrade. I just put 3 more friends in there. 3 Flowerhorns. When they start growing I will upgrade the tank again...

Simon: Oscars laying down like this is usual behavior due to stress or inadequate water parameters. I had my share of panic due to this phenomenae.

If this were my call (which isn't, it's all yours) I wouldn't add any other fish there at all.

You might be surprised how fast little Oscars turn into huge fish. A 55gal is considered the minimum for keeping one Oscar without a single tankmate.

You do have more than good filtration there but upgrading "eventually" could end up in disaster if for whatever reason you fall behind schedule. Your Oscar could end up eating (or killing out of lack of space) the parrots and most likely than not the Tiger Barbs (the latter from my own experience).

Hi Simon. You've been given some great advice, but I should add that keeping 3 Flowerhorns, 2 Parrots and an Oscar together is not a good idea, unless the tank is HUGE,200gal+. Flowerhorns are very aggressive fish and if left in the 55gal too long will probably kill the Parrots, Oscar and then start on each other.

great advice from everyone!! and im glad you upgraded...but why add more to an already way overstocked tank? especially agressive fish like flowerhorns ?

But they're still tiny... I think I have a few months to a year before I have to get a bigger tank or a second tank! I already have my eyes on a 92 Gallon Corner Tank. Although I believe the Parrots are the least aggressive of the 3 kinds, they are the biggest. The Oscar is very aggressive. The Flowerhorns are about an 1" to 1 1/2". I have a few pictures up, I will put them up for you guys to see. Do you guys think I have too much filtration? Or the more the better?

Eventually I hope, if the fiance allows I will have 3 tanks in my house. 1 for my parrots, another one for the Flowerhorns, and I think I'll be investing in some Green Terrors later on when I have extra tanks.

The more filtration the better, especially with fish like that.
Good luck getting your bigger tank. This could be a good start to MTS (multi tank sydrome) I would start looking now though. You have some pretty big types of fish there and they grow allot faster then you think they should. Try www.craigslist.com I bought my 120 with stand, canister filter and even fish for $400.00. It was a steal and i see deal's like that all the time. It's hard to pass them up really..lol..Right now there is a 300 gallon that I want BADLY. Good luck with finding one and keep us updated on your tank

92 corner is a really cool tank, but the footprint is relatively small and won't give your fish adequate space to claim territories. JMO.

you definitely dont have a year if you keep all those fish ....oscars alone grow the most in the first 1-2 years..and slow down after that....the more comfortable those flowerhorns get in their new tank, the more vicious they will be...even your parrots are calm because its a new tank, but that will change also very soon.....a 92 gal is a great size but not the corners...oscars NEED horizontal swimming space as they twist and turn and somersault constantly in a tank... you need extra filtration with all those fish and the more you get the better...even as juvies, they have a ton of waste...

Yea I don't think the 2 canisters I have is enough! I just did a water change today, and there's still a little bit of poop floating around that I used a net to catch. How about an Under gravel filter? Or will there always be poop flying around from under gravel. Maybe I don't have enough bacteria....

Feel free to send me an Instant Message on AIM if anybody wants to give me some more tips... I can never get enough! =) I think I'm becoming obsessed with my fishes.... I have a nice lounge chair facing the tank, and I love to sit there at night and watch them...

UGF's will NOT work for those fish...it will trap the waste and you will almost have an impossible time to keep it clean....what type of cannisters do you have? size? 2 should be plenty for that size tank if they are the right size...but again, you have some huge waste producers ...bacteria has nothing to do with poo...you still need to clean it and keep it out of the subtrate..the bacteria wont do that for you

thats about 143gph and no not enough try selling or trading the 2 of them for at least the 405 ...that will last for a few months but with the waste, it wont last very long

in my 75 gal with oscars, I had a penplax 1200 which has a GPH of about 300 and I still had to do every other day water changes to keep my nitrates under 25....

When you do a Water change make sure you are vacuuming the gravel really well...Think of yourself as a waste eliminator...lol... When I do my W/C in the tank with gravel I make sure I get every spot and under every decoration. You don't want any waste in your gravel at all. It just starts decomposing and turning into harmful nitrates.
