Even though your friend is not keeping their fish in a tank that's suitable for them doesn't make it right.

We know you love your fish, otherwise you wouldn't be here asking for help.
When we love something very much sometimes we have to make the decisions that's in their best interest even though we don't want to.
It's very hard, but the right choice to take them back. When you do, know in your heart that you've made a very unselfish and wise decision.
