Curious about Coloring

I recently bought a beautiful Flame Gourami, Steve, and I have been amazed by the change in his coloration since bringing him home.

In the store, we could barely tell that his top fin was blue in color, but he's been home a week tomorrow and the blue is vibrant and striking! His orange has really popped too, its gotten darker in some areas and really defined overall.

I've noticed that some of my other fish have gotten more vibrant but I pretty much told myself I was imagining it...with Steve it is undeniable and even my kids noticed!

So, my question to you all is this: does this happen a lot with fish and do you know why? I am assuming it is a good thing, but I am curious as to what causes it

Yep, fish will change color after you bring them home! They only show their most vibrant colors when they are in ideal conditions. At the stores they are usually stressed and cramped, so their colors tend to pale.

Yup I'm with Pink,
Almost every fish will do a transformation once they are in a good environment, eating a good diet, and comfortable in their tank. It's def a good thing. It's very amazing really and it always makes me super happy when they start to color up, It just shows that your doing a great job with your fish kids.

Thank you...he is a happy boy!

We welcomed another gourami to our family tonight (in a different tank) and I hope he colors up as nicely as Steve did...he already seems much more animated than he did at the store!

Wow he looks like he is happy with his new home!

My angels do that too. If I stress them out doing a water change or something they turn off all their color. It's very drastic. I have a few that change colors instantly. I can sit and watch the color come and go.
