It appears to be some type of algae.

The above link may help you to identify it.

Possibly brush or beard algae

Aah, my dad calls it ye old fuzzy wuzzy annoyance. I have it in the tank I inherited, it's a bit of a pin but doesn't grow on plants for me.

If it does grow on walls or the back, get a credit card or equivalent and scrape it off, works better than a razor IMO.

Good luck

It almost looks like some that I had growing all over my plants except mine was green in color. I got rid of mine by turning the lights off for 3 days (tank sits in dark spot of house) until it all died off. After I started turning the lights back on I upped my dosage of Flourish from once a week to twice a week and so far it hasn't come back. I don't know that this would work with your algae problem if they are not the same type but its a good place to start.

That's black beard algae. It can be tough to get rid of. You can do a bleach dip with 1 part bleach to 20 parts water. Dip the tough plants for no more than 2 minutes, the more fragile plants for no longer than 1 minute. The BBA should easily come off after that. Then, soak the plants for a few minutes in a bucket of dechlorinated water with 4 times the normal amount of dechlorinator. Other folks have had good luck dosing Flourish Excel, but Excel will melt anacharis and vals if you have any of those.
