Am I getting wrong readings?

Hey all,

I have been trying to get my tank cycled for about 2 weeks now with your help and have also bought some TSS. After about 12 days now I am wanting to think its cycled, but my one ammonia reading is saying otherwise...

I have an ammonia reading of about 2ppm, but my trates ar at 7-10 and trites at 0. (if thats the correct one, i mix them up still learning!) and my pH is about 7.4.

The fish are active and healthy, the water is clear as can be and there is no foul smells or anything coming off when i lift up the lid.

I'm utterly confused. There was a point where the fish were really lethargic and at the bottom about 10 days ago, but right now as i watch it they are swimming all over the place like its there job. Everything seems normal but my ammonia readings.

Any ideas

Thanks guys!

you should have 0 ammonia and nitrites...and under 20 nitrates...so if you have ammonia after 12 days, time to do 50% water changes with some prime because tss didnt work for you

just keep checking and doing water change as test results dictate, sometimes it can take up to 2 months to fully cycle, be patient and vigalent with the water changes

What test kit are you using. If it is test strips I would highly recommend getting an API liquid test kit. The strips are know for being very innacurate.

My fault, I should have noted what i was using.

I am using API liquid test kits. I put 8 drops in from solution 1, and 8 in from solution 2. shake it, let it sit for 5 and it comes back like that.

It just seems like everything else in the tank is cycled or wanting to. I was thinking I have a false reading. maybe i'll stop by my LFS and get them to test it to double check the accuracy.

It just seems like the tank is 100% better from when i first set it up and the fish are actually moving around and acting like, well, fish should!

Perhaps your test kit has expired...there should be a series of numbers on the bottle/box...what do they say?
