I would go with a dwarf gourami, they are bigger and very pretty

What kind of algea eater do you have? Do you still have the molly and platys listed in your aqaurium info?
Is your tank cycled? What are your readings?
IMO A betta wouldn't work, danios and neons can be fin nippers and most betta don't make good community fish. They can get aggressive especially in a 10g.

I think the OP can put a betta in there and see what happens. They all have different personalities. Don't paint all bettas with such a broad brush. Not all are aggressive and some indeed make fine community tankmates. Mine is fine with his tankmates in a 12 gallon. I think the key is to make sure there's nothing with big fins in there that can be mistaken for another betta. A betta that is used to being alone might be trouble, but one that's used to having company will usually be fine in a community aquarium.

Not nesseccarily. All bettas have a different temperment. Even ones kept in a community aquarium may hate it, and one day go from being fine to being anything but fine, my grandfather (yes-MTS is definatly heriditary!) Used to keep a betta in one of his community tanks, it was fine for a year, and then one day killed all the other fish, included some neon tetras. It can go from being fine to not being fine.

Some indeed make community fish, however not with nippers such as Danios. Bettas are tempermental and can go from one extreme to another.

I don't think Lucy was painting them with a broad brush, just warning that if the betta says I want out, it has somewhere to go, and it isn't reccomended without having a back-up tank.

IMO danios and tetras would be happier in a bigger group. Danios are great little schoolers who LOVE to swim. Bettas can indeed become nasty to others even after a long peaceful existence (been there). Keep in mind also they like a slow moving, low current environment, danios on the other hand love bubbles and waves to play in. I would rethingk the betta, and perhaps increase your schools. Good luck.

personally i would just add more danios and tetras to make them in a proper school.

i am big on bettas as community fish but i wouldnt suggest one in your tank.

Before I would recommend adding anything, it would be important to know what kind of "algae eater" is in the tank. Hopefully it's a oto- I wouldn't keep any pleco in a 10 gallon.

I agree with everyone else. A betta prob wouldnt work very well in your community setting. But adding some more tetras to the tank would be great IMO.
In large numbers like around 6 they have a good chance of schooling, which is an amazing sight to see. If you want a bigger fish, dwarfs Gouramis would also be an excellent choice.
Whatever you do, good luck and keep us posted.
