| | Fish Keeper | You don't have to get Prime to do a water change. Since you don't have it, just use any product that is a dechlorinator. A 50% water change will cut the ammonia level in half, so you may need to do this multiple times a day. The important thing right now is to get the ammonia level down no matter what dechlorinator you use. |

| | Fish Keeper | Glad the little guy's looking better! Hope it keeps going well for you Kay. I'd keep on going with the W/C's for now, just to make sure that you don't have another ammonia spike. I'd lower the W/C's to about 30% though.
Good luck! |

| | Fish Bum | Ok il do a 30% one today should i start feeding them again? and is his tail anything to worry about or will it heal itself? |

| | Fish Keeper | The water changes should help heal his tail, pristine water is the cure for many an ailment within the aquarium. I'd recommend feeding very small pinch twice a day, when the light goes on, and when it goes off. Make sure that it's crushed up quite small, they get more of it and you can feed less. I'd continue with the W/C's with the conditioner until his tails healed, do every day for one week, then every other day until it's healed.
It may take a while, up to a month dependant on how large it is.
Good luck with it |

| | Fish Keeper | With any possible cycling issues in the tank, I would cut down to feeding once a day or once every other day. Even in cycled tanks, my fish only eat once a day, and we skip a day every week. A lot of people overfeed IMO (not saying you do, just that it's really easy to do). |

| | Fish Bum | Ive only fed them once today so i wont feed them again. What sort of live food can you give guppys? If there is any. |

| | Fish Keeper | If pH is lower than 7.4, I would not worry about that high Ammonia( NH3) because most of NH3 is in toxic form. But I would be concerned if pH lower than 6.8 as exposure to low pH, especially new fish, would cause such symptoms on Guppy.
Rather than depending on chemical additives, would perform smalm, not 50%, on daily basis. Even twice or three times a day depending on test results. Dont know the ph of yout tap? That would help in determining how much and how often pwc should be done.
If what you posted is pH b/n 6 and 8, it is terrible kit. Get a better test kit as Lucy said and post result. Doing small water changes for now is better than none. Knowing more precise pH of tank and tap water sould help.
As far as med, how about waiting until water is up to par. I dont have much trust in Melafix personally since it is more prophylactic than actual specific antibiotic.
If the symptoms worsens, you may use formalite (may not be avail anymorte but either Aq Pharm or Jungle might have equivalent) and if the edges of fin pectoral fins develop crust add Amphicillin.
You can separate the fish using breeding trap or other DIY contraption (floating strainer, yes one that used for noodles but new one just for fish tank) if you dont have QT, at least to separate from being bothered. |

| | Fish Keeper | I see where you're coming from, but it's been my experience for years that 50% water changes will not harm fish except in cases of "old tank syndrome" which this clearly is not (I would never do this for marine fish, though). In fact, my weekly changes are 50-60%. In a case where the tank is cycling, I feel it's important to cut the ammonia level quickly, and possibly several times a day. But, my personal experience is certainly worth no more than yours, and I respect your opinion. |

| | Fish Bum | Well the ammonia levels are down, doign a 40-50% water change everyday, ive been out today and bought them an air pump and some air stones so hopfully they will ike that. However Tac has a part of his tail missing im not sure how it got there but since his tail has fanned out mroe you can see it, I took some pictures
I am worried about him still, he does look better though (apart from his tail) im not sure if due to him being ill or if the other 2 have one this to him.
Hope you can see the pictures clearly |

| | Fish Keeper | Woah, the little rays are showing! Poor guy! I've never seen an injury like that. I'd buy a small acrylic breeder and keep him in there to isolate him from the other guppies. Keep with pristine water changes, good luck with the lil fella! |

| | Fish Bum | Ok not good news, hes lost more than half his tail now... Is this somthing done byt the other 2 fish? Does the small acrylic breeder tank need to be heated and have a filter?
Ive tryed to take a picture of him but hes moving around fast so i didnt get a good one, its not really stopping him from swimming. Is it fatal though? If his hole tail falls of will he not be able to swim?
Ive put red lines through where he has lost more of his tail Last edited by kaystar; August 3rd, 2009 at 03:39 PM.

| | Fish Keeper | Basically an acylic breeder floats in the tank, its what you put pregnant females in, but works well as a Q-tine tank. It doesnt need to be heated and filtered as water can flow through.
Good luck with the little guy, some guppies see another one is sick and just pick on him, it's really sad.
He's a lovely fish, good luck with him, I'm sure someone else will be able to help to a higher standard soon. |

| | Moderator | poor lil guy...he looks so sad but having all males in that size tank, is most likely an agression issue males are bullies.. he needs a breeder trap so he can heal and not be picked on anymore as well as some fish protector and vita chem if you can find it..partial daily water changes with some stress coat will also help heal his fins but it will take a few weeks ....his face is priceless love his features |
