which is harder to keep? discus or german blue ram. i have a 40 gallon tank with lots of cardianals and neons. i tried keeping german blue ram 2 times. they both died within 14 days.. was thinking about keeping discus. which is harder to keep? german blue ram or discus?

tank mates: neon + cardinal tetras, few zebra danios
condition: ammonia, nitrite: 0, nitrate : 15

Personally i say Rams. I havn't been able to keep them to save my life. Discus are real easy to me.

You'd have to raise the Temp some for Discus, and i'm not sure all of those fast swimming fish will be good with the discus, could work though.

For that 40G, I would suggest to stay with GBR.
Try setting up separate 5G/10G to accomodate new GBR, a Q/T.
GBR is lot easier to keep than BR. Just give them what they need. Trust me, very easy to keep and breeed these GBR are.
What part of Jersey are you in? If you are near NYC or in Queens from time to time, I can notify you when I see good and healthy batch of GBR are in Town.
Although some staffs at Fishtown in Bayside Queens are ill mannered/rude, I personally dont care Only if I can obtain healthy and even mated pairs. They usually bring them in large quantity on Sun night thus few days or even week later should be enough time for fish to settle at LFS.
I have not seen this many GBR in one shipment at any other lfs in Queens.
You could call for shipment schedule or I can notify you if you are planning to come to Queens. LMK. I'll see what I can do.
I have recently picked out few mated pairs from there for my friends. I may drive staffs somewhat crazy since I know which fish I want, but If I am buying 10 -15 mated pairs in one shot, they better have patience.

Again, Discus is not the best choice for that size tank. If neons/cardinals are large enough, would make good tankmates provided tank is larger, IMHO.

Try local cichlid clubs if and when possible (cheaper and healthier. They will tell you how easy GBR are to keep and breed.

Good Luck!

Tough question...

I say raising Discus is harder than Rams, due to the increase in feedings. I have also found that keeping adult Discus to be relatively easy, but have had problems with stunted juvies.

I have had great success raising and breeding Rams. I currently have one breeding pair and three male juvies which I may try to pair with a female.

Juvi, but Live Aquaria's discus are not that great in quality.

Personally I wouldn't keep Discus in anything less then a 55g. They also have some special requirements if your to keep them successfully. GBR's I couldn't keep if my life depended on it, and I've tried. Boy have I tried! Went through 10 in 2 months. No more for me. Some people have better luck.

Personally, I'd say Discus are harder, because of the pristine water requirements, virtually no nitrates and a huge aquarium, with low lighting and lots of filtration.

I have a GBR right now, had him for three weeks and he's doing really well. Personally, the only difficultly is the age of the water needed. If you get good stock, n ot hormone treated that has been not overly bred, then they are relatively easy to keep.

All myths! I've kept them under a Metal Halide, in tanks as small as 20-30gal, and with just sponge filters.

Agree! Nitrate doesn't do much to fish in low concentration (<20ppm). It just increases algae growth.
