algae

Our tank has been set up for awhile now but I'm now starting to see algae. I haven't increased feedings and been keeping up on the tank cleanings but the
algae keeps coming back. One fake plant looks nasty even though I tried rinsing it off over and over. I'm going to have to replace that plant. What else can I do about the algae? It's even starting to grow on the tube for the filter.

Thanks,
Mae

You can try decreasing the amount of time the light is on. If it's real bad, keep the lights off for a while, it'll die off.

Mae, I was having issues with algae in my 10 gall, reduced feeding to once a day (unless Im feeling guilty and they are looking like theyre begging), reduced the lights by 4 hrs and the algae is under control. Do you have any live plants?

i agree with aldric, a small breed of pleco or some other type of algae eating fish or invertabrate.

I have the room to add another fish, maybe I'll look into getting a small pleco. The algae is greenish/brown. I don't have any pictures of it. It cleans right off with the aquarium scrubbing pad that I bought and thats how I've been keeping the glass free of the algae but just seems like the next day it's back again.

Thanks for the advice and suggestions. Will cut back on the hours of light and try to decrease the feeding a little more.

Thanks,
Mae

Try rinsing the gravel out with conditioned tap water and scrub the filter out really well, along with reducing lighting. I've witnessed this in a 25 gallon and no algae eater could control it. We ended up doing a large water change, a good scrubbing, and replacing the substrate. It's been nearly a year and all seems well.
