Moving aquarium.

Hi, I am hoping that someone can advise me on the best order to move my fish to their new (larger) home. We are moving our 3 guppies, 2 mollies, 6 harlequins, 3 corys and a bristle plec to a new 180Litre tank. It is still cycling, and not yet planted so I have plenty of time, but I wondered if the fish need to go into their new home in any particular order. Will some be more territorial than others? I do know that the corys shouldn't go in first as they need the waste food from the others to eat.
Thank you for any help you can offer.

The amount of fish that you have IMO is still understock. Once the tank is fully cycled you can just add them all in at once with proper acclimation. Since this is a new tank and water chemistry might be different, you should drag the acclimation period longer than normal (an hour i guess) so the fish doesn't stress out.

Thank you!
The new tank has an external filter - will this be able to cope with all the fish going in at once - I thought you should only add 6 fish at a time to a tank? It would be much easier to add them all at once.

We will add more fish once the new tank is ready - I would like to get 3 more corys, 6 more mollies, and a couple of feature fish, still debating angels over gourami's.....

welcome to fishlore !!!

how are you cycling the tank? if the older tank is cycled, you can move the filter, decorations and gravel (if you are going to use different gravel, hang all the old gravel in a nylon in the new tank ..the nylon must be new and not washed in detergents...) right over to the new tank with your fish for an instant cycle...the only thing you want to check before adding fish, is the pH of both tanks...if they are much different, then acclimation takes longer ....

Hi!
Its a slow fishless cycle! We have added bacteria and the tap safe, and we are taking the opportunity to get things better this time. When we bought the first tank (60 Litres) our daughters chose pink gravel and we had a few plants and bogwood. As we have learnt more we wanted to start again with better substrate, plant soil, big bogwood pieces with hiding places for our corys, and much better planting. In time the small tank can go in another room with different fish. (MTS already!!)

Thank you so much for your help.

when you say you added "bacteria' do you know the name of it?

It's called Filterstart, by Interpet. We are adding some every second day for 7 doses. As we are upgrading the filter from a small internal to an external we thought it best to have a completely fresh cycle and get the water perfect for the fish.

ive never heard of it before...learn new things daily how long does it say it takes? it sounds allot like a product called cycle...when you have to add a multitude of times, its usually not the proper bacteria to sustain itself without adding over and over....and once you stop using it, the cycle crashes...if you find its not doing its job , let the tank run for a week or so without any additives then use everything from your established tank as an instant cycle....

That's great - thank you for the advice! Nice to know there's an easier/ better way to do it.

One thing I'll add is the cories can go in at any point of order you want. They do not eat the "waste food" of other fish if by that you mean the feces of other fish. Cories need regular fish food just like any other fish, so please be sure to feed them properly.

Also, I'm with Shawnie in that I've never heard of this bacterial starter product you're using - which makes me tend to believe it's no good. Tetra Safestart is the successor to the legendary Bio-Spira. As far as I know they are patented as the only legitimate bacteria seeding products on the market with the correct form of aquatic bacteria. Bio-Spira is no longer made for freshawater setups (the marine version is still sold), leaving TSS as the lone legit product for freshwater applications that I know of.

Sorry Craig, they get pellets after lights out as well as the live and frozen food which they love. Corys (and my Bristle) are my favourites so far and they are a little spoilt. I have checked the bacteria and it's licenced only for Britain so not available in the States. Must be our version of the one Shawnie mentioned.

unfortunately, it wont be the good bacteria tho simon anything you have to add continuously, cannot self sustain and produce the proper bacteria for the tank to cycle....

No need to be sorry, you just had me worried there for a minute that you thought they lived on poo! I googled this Filterstart stuff and it seems to be marketed by different companies. I found a version made by Ultra Clear and a version made by JBL. One is a garden bacteria made for koi ponds, and i'm not sure what's up with the other. I can't vouch for either as I am unfamiliar with this stuff, so tread lightly. Neither can be like TSS without a license because SafeStart's formula is patented.

Curiouser and curiouser......
Good thing we are not in a hurry for the cycle, but we used the product with our first tank and its recommended by the aquatic retailers here, I'll post a photo once the new tank is fully stocked....
Thanks for your help.

as you learn more and more along the way, which we all do daily, you will see that allot of the recommendations from LFS are to make money and they arent always very knowledgeable with fish and products..they want to make money and dont always care about the health of our tanks..now and then you will find that rare store that does tho!!...but we have all been there and even now, we still see this happening more and more...cant wait to see pics
