Great advise from all above.
Don't touch your filter for a month or two after the cycle completes. The good bacteria are very delicate on a newly cycled tank.
Until they get established on more surfaces of your tank, hands off!
Your sponge should be fine until it literally falls apart. When you get near that point, you could place a second sponge in the filter to seed it.
To do this, you may need to remove the carbon for the space in the filter.
My theory is: put the new sponge on top of the old one so any bacteria living in the old one can possibly get pushed up into the new with the water flow.
Once your tank and filter are established for 8 months or more, you should be able to up the cleaning timetable to
gently rinsing your filter components monthly, if you need to.
I agree with ABCDemily to
be conservative with your cleaning for quite a while.
Your feeding and stocking will determine how often you need to clean filters.
Not for your new tank, but for everyone else that have ACs:
I wanted to remind everyone that the manufacturer suggests owners take the motor off,
clean the impellor and the hole it sits in every 3 or 4 months.
It gets pretty gunky in there!
