The Great Tank Stocking Debate!

Yesterday my LFS finally got in their $50 10 gallon kits. I had been waiting and prepared, as the shipment was a couple weeks late.

After getting it all set up I seeded it with a few tablespoon's worth of gravel in a piece of new pantyhose I had been keeping in the filter of the 20 gallon to gather bacteria. I put in some flake food. I checked this morning, and it's all cycled!

For the time being, the tank is intended to be a fry grow up tank, but after the fry grow up.. Oh, the possibilities! It is pebble and gravel bottom, 'lightly planted' with silk and plastic plants (I'm getting live plants once I have some more money). I would prefer not to divide it, as I like the look of it now, but I can if I need to.

I am considering having cories in with the fry (so that the cories will already be established if I add a betta or other fish later), but that depends on how many fry there are.

Considering:

the two runty swordtails (stopped growing at about the size of a rasbora) and some cories

the two runty swordtails and a school of tetras

a betta and some cories

two dwarf puffers (I would change the gravel for sand, of course)

a school of tetras and some cories

Or whatever you guys can imagine up!

Swordtail fry- we lost our male to a fungal infections a couple months back, but swordtail females can store sperm and become pregnant up to six times after the male leaves.

I might go for two DP's, they're awsome little fish, but in the end it's up to you. A betta and some cory's would be lovely, but then again, needs a backup plan if Mr Betta doesn't like his bottom-dwelling friends.

Maybe six neons or cardinals, black neons or glowlight tetras, the glow's can get to two inches though, so I guess you'd be over.

Good luck with whatver you choose!

OOH! Or you could have a divided betta tank

I was thinking about a divided betta tank, but I kind of like the way it is set up now and to divide it I'd have to rearrange everything.

A school of cardinals might be neat, but then I wouldn't have room for cories. I'll think about the neons- I could probably have a school of them and two cories.

EDIT: Thanks, bolivianbaby. I had a Dali calender on the wall behind the tank- I might have to laminate some of the pictures for a background XD

Please excuse me for asking but what is the tank kit called?

It isn't called anything- it isn't a factory style kit (like the hexes that come with everything), it's something only my non-franchise LFS does. All of the components come in separately, and he puts them together at the store.

It came with:

1 10 gallon tank
1 Rio 110 filter
2 Marina 15 W bulbs
1 tank hood
1 sample pack of Omega One fish flakes
1 silk plant
1 plastic Ornament
1 50 watt ViaAqua glass heater

Well, shoot- you know what they say about the best laid plans of mice and men?

One of my mature swordtail fry is going from female to male. My male platy (which so far had stopped this from happening) has fallen gravely ill (he's still around, but barely), and the swordtail is getting ready to take his place. I'm going to need to separate the new male in my 10 gallon at least until I figure out where these fry are going, otherwise I'll be overrun with fry.

Just a note about dwarf puffers (happened in my case) make sure you can "divide" the tank with plants ornaments etc. I had two that, if they could see each other, they fought (to the death of one). I am not sure it happens in all cases, but it did in mine. Love anything with corys...they are the most awesome little fish! Send pics once its all set up! Good luck

I've sort-of decided on that one soon-to-be male swordtail and three cories. Of course, my tank just decided to mini cycle *coughtoolongaperiodwithoutaddingfoodcough* so I grabbed some more gravel from the 20 gallon.
