Nitrates too high. Help!!

When I bought a new tank 1 or 2 months ago it came with estabilished bacteria.etc and fish: (1 electric yellow cichlid and 2 J. Dicklfedia) so I set evrything up and only yesterday I bought a new API test kit. And every thing is fine except my nitrates are 50+. My fish have been 100% for two months now. I suppose I want to know what I should do to decrease the nitrates? My parameters are: pH: 7.6 ammonia: 0 Nitrites: 0 Nitrates: 50

small water changes will keep nitrates at an acceptable level.

How often are you presently doing them? and by how much?

good luck with your new tank ! Sounds like it's going smoothly for you.

water changes will help that a ton...id do a 25% one now and then another 30-40% tonite ..that should do it

Water changes will bring the nitrates down.
So as not to shock the fish 2 25% water changes today would be a good idea.
That should bring the reading down to 25.
Keep an eye on your water parameters to see how quickly it rises and do water changes accordingly.
