| | Fish Helper | connection is leaking HELP!
I bought a new Eheim canister filter two days ago, and it ran fine but 30 minutes ago is started leaking. I disconnected the fitting (it is on the output side) and looked at the o-ring, looks fine, redid it and it still leaked.
I even tried a bit of teflon tape on it, but no go.
I have an inline heater as well, so right now my 77 gal tank has a filter and heater in it meant for a 20gal.
Anything I can do to fix this? Even temporarily?
I'm not even sure if the store/warranty covers this?
Has anyone replaced the cheesy (of course I think they're cheesy now that they are leaking) plastic connections with something better? |

| | Fish Helper | Are they leaking from the middle of the quick disconnect, or where the hose couples to the connector? After filter maintenance, I will sometimes get leaks and have to go back over the connections to tighten them up. Check the hose connection on the top side of the connector. When mine leaks the water collects on the connector, which makes it look like the connector is leaking. |

| | Fish Helper | Its leaking right at the connector - I can turn the valve on and watch the water drip. The hose connections are absolutely dry - I even wrapped my hand around it to make sure it was not leaking on the other side where I could not see.
sniffle...I didn't do any maintenance, I only set it up two days ago... |

| | Fish Helper | There was a popping noise too, which is what twigged me to look. At first I thought it was the inline heater sparking, as it was being dripped on, but now that I'm a bit calmer I remember another thread where the poster mentioned a popping noise. Would that indicate a specific problem? Last edited by sheamurai; July 3rd, 2009 at 10:55 PM.
Reason: typo |

| | Fish Helper | Maybe I'll just return the darn thing and go back to the old hanger type filter - at least you never have to worry about coming home to a flood or fire... Last edited by Lucy; August 12th, 2009 at 11:08 PM.

| | Fish Helper | Don't give up yet, it sounds like you got a defective connector. I would go back to the store to see if you can get a replacement. |

| | Fish Helper | No, I shut the valves off so it wouldn't leak anymore. |

| | Fish Keeper | This may sound silly to ya buuuut try some plumbers tape, or just take it back. |

| | Fish Addict | It should have a 2 yr. warranty/guarantee of some sort.
I would call the manufacturer or the place you bought it from
and see what info they can tell you about getting it to stop leaking, if that is possible, or
replacement if it is defective.
If it has to be replaced, ask if there is somewhere locally you can turn it in (and hopefully swap it out) instead of shipping it back...
You may have to wait until Monday to get through to someone, tho.
Good luck,

| | Fish Helper | If you read my first post, you'll see that I did try plumbers tape (teflon tape, unless I'm naming it wrong).
I brought it to the store today (Big Al's) and turns out the pop I heard was the connector cracking - just a hairline, but enough to leak. I guess I had tightened it a bit too much and it cracked - whodathunk it would crack two days after the fact!
Got a new connector now and I'm back up and running.
Thanks all for your comments! |

| | Fish Helper | Thanks - turns out Big Als is open on Saturday - they gave me a new connector and I'm back up and running.
I was just panicking last night as with the filter out my 77 gallon tank had no heat and no filter/aeration.
I ended up putting in two small 50 watt heaters and running my old 20gal filter on it overnight. Temp never dropped and all fish accounted for (except the shrimp, as always), but last night I was panicking! |

| | Fish Helper | thanks Shawnie - I had put it in two different forums as I was not getting any responses from the one spot at the time - seems there are more people reading the Beginners Forum than the other more specific ones. |
