Rebuild/restart

about a week ago my 12inch oscar died with fish fungus, and i made a horrible mistake in diagnosing the sickness as ick, my fault noone else to blame, but now i am goin to rebuild the tank and probly make a community tank since i have a baby on the way and i want something to keep his attention. Also vivid colors are said to help with babies eye devolopment. So i want to go with a very colorfull and active tank. im just looking for some ideas and suggestions from an experienced keeper. this will be the first time that i have tried a fishless cycle also so any help on that would be great. my tank is on the first week of cycling but i dont have nitrite, nitrate, or ammonia test kits yet. i have balenced the pH to 7.2 and put in some jumpstart and aquasafe water conditioner. i will be getting some test kits soon.

Platies, neon tetras, endler's tetras are all very colorful fish. Mickey Mouse platys have mickey mouse ears on their tails. That's my daughter's favorite.

Corydoras are very active, but not colorful. They're great bottom feeders.

Hope this helps and I'm sure someone will be along shortly to provide information on the fishless cycle.

Welcome to fishlore!!!

Im so sorry for the loss of your oscar that had to be so very hard...they are my favs

why tho do you have to recycle the tank? did you let it stand empty without an ammonia source and loose the cycle?

what size is the tank? that will help members suggest community fish for you....

heres a link on fishless cycle methods... Four Methods of Fish Less Cycling

good luck!

Maybe some barbs and danios. I have tigar barbs and zebra danios in my 38g. They eat just about anything too, even algea wafers. Tigars aren't just tan and black, you can find green, red, and albino ones too.

29 gallon, i want to cycle the tank so i can get rid of any left over disease in the water, plus i had to buy a new filter cause the one i had was just about worn out. so with a new bio filter i wanted to start out fresh, also i never have cycled a tank before. oscars are usually pretty tough when i comes to water, as long as the ph was right and i used the regular water treatments.

Good morning. There may be some aggression issues with more than 1 Gourami in the same tank. Especially if there is more than one male. The rest looks fine. You could actually add another 2 Cory's instead of having 3 Gourami's. The Cory's love to school as well.
Best of luck and hope you can send some pictures our way

Good idea, only probloem is that DG's will fight, often to the death. They are solitary creatures that don't need to be kept with other DG's to be happy.

Female DGs are extremely difficult to find, and if you do happen to find one, you'll notice it isn't very colorful. The male may still harass a female. I'd suggest keeping a solitary male. The rest of your stock list looks fine to me.

How about some Harliquins, they are quite hardy and have nice color.

The only Gourami's I've ever had any luck with keeping more than one of are Pearls. They seem to be quite a bit less agressive than most others.
