Sera Nitrivec and the Nitrogen Cycle

Hi learned folks!

We have this product on the local market and it *seems* to imply that with a new tank, you set her up, fill with water, put in the water conditioner (Sera Aqutan), add Nitrivec then after 24 hours, add fish. Continue adding Nitrivec every day for 10 days. Then you are done!

What do you think of this product vis a vis the nitrogen cycle? I include the link to the product below

http://www.aquaticlifeaquariums.com.au/index1.html

And from the product website:

http://www.sera-usa.com/product.php?...5&cat=0&page=1

Thanks much!

Hi scugrad....any product that has to be added for any amount of time other than just the first initial setup, (like tetra safestart) usually doesnt have the self sustaining bacteria needed to sustain the tanks cycle....ive never heard of this product tho and from what I can read about it, it sounds more like the product cycle and maybe others have heard of it....good luck !

So, Shawnie, in your expert opinion, Tetra SafeStart is the way to go? If I go with TSS, I add that to the water then what? Add fish after 24 hours?

IMO from experience, but im no expert lol, you fill the tank with your water and tap water conditioner, then wait 24 hours and add your TSS and fish....wait 7-10 days and see how the cycle went ...

some factors that seem to make a difference...

pH- if ph is below 6.8 , it does take longer as its ammonium not ammonia under that ph..ammonium does seem to starve the bacteria in the TSS to some extent where it goes past the 10 days...some members have had to do small water changes for a week or so after the 10 days....

using the conditioner for tap water then waiting the 24 hours is a must as some conditioners detox the ammonia and stall when mixing it with tss....

make sure the shelf life isnt over 6 months old of the bottle

no extreme heat or cold that the bottle has been exposed to

good luck and hope you can find some!

your welcome but beware of someone suggesting an "equivalent product" to tss...they all seem to say many are the same
