They say it can't be done....

Alright...they say it can't be done...but...

I have been closely following one of my neon tetras. The fish simply keeps getting bigger!! The neon in question has this odd bulge at the bottom belly, towards the back. It is starting to keep to it's own a little bit more lately, and I am wondering if it could be full of eggs

For those of you who answered my frantic post for help regarding the birth of my little baby guppies, thank you!!! The 3 little gaffers that I found (completely unexpected!!!) are now safely swimming in a big breeding net, and they are growing daily!

I really don't want a repeat of the "whatisthatcrazylookingthingmovingthroughthewa ter-ohmygodit'safish!!!" drama that happened last week, so I figured I should follow up on my suspicion about this particular neon!

Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated! Oh...and the picture of it is on my profile in case the one I attached didn't work...I can't figure out how to add the photo here

LOL

they say that neon tetras cannot (well, usually will not) be successful at spawning in a tank.

Welcome to Fish Lore Amberlynn. There is also a chance that the fish could be constipated. What do you feed your guys?

It might be a good idea to feed bits (the size of it's eye) of thawed frozen shelled pea. If the fish is constipated, hopefully, this will help get things moving.
If it is holding eggs, the peas won't hurt.

Wouldn't it be better to lightly boil pea's so they become softer?

As long as they're thawed they'll be soft enough.

LOL...the little buggers are definitely not constipated!! They get some flake food, algae tablets, and their favourite...frozen food!! They all poop quite regularly. That is good to know though, for future thought!

I have been checking around, and doing tons of research. Turns out that neon tetras get bulky/chubby in the belly area right before they have a growth spurt! I closely monitored them, just to make sure that they didn't lay dinner for the tank...That one in particular is still looking a little chubby, but not like it was. There was a ridge along the bottom belly area, and that has gone away, and is nice and smooth now....

who knew!
