Red Rainbows

I have decided that I need some fish that will be out during the day time and thanks to advice here and some further research I have decided to give Glossolepis Incisus (Red Rainbows) a shot. My local LFS has 2" for $12.00 a piece I think that is big enough to discourage my 5" knife for now.

(*Edit*:Answered question by reading rainbow section of forums /facepalm)

I was also thinking of breeding possibilities if I do 4 should I do 1 male and 4 females?

Thanks in advance!

I think they do best in larger groups... but will do fine in a group of 4-5.

Do you by chance know if i should do 1 male and 3 fems or 2 of each for breeding in the future?

I can't tell you that... I've read that you need at least one female in a group to bring out the display colors in the males... and that for optimal harmony you need an even mix of male/female... but I'm not really sure about the source (one of the problems of internet research). I'll look around and see if I can find the site where I found out about sexing and other breeding info and post it soon. It was really helpful and would probably have the info you need.

Thanks for the help Jenn, I just found this link; http://members.optushome.com.au/chelmon/Breedbow.htm

If this is correct looks like 3 males and 2 females. I swear I can never get out of my LFS spending less than 50 bucks.

Can anyone confirm if the link above is accurate?

Info on Rainbowfish Home, the link you provide is as good as it gets for their natural environment conditions. A great site I use as reference.

Be aware that Glossolepis incisus males sometimes get really rough with females as they mature and go into breeding. Keeping a separate tank (ideally not only cycled but with similar water parameters) to move the girls in case this happens seems to be a good idea.

Telling males from female is quite easy: if you spot some red-orange colors it's a male. Females stay olive-silver. As with most rainbowfish, as juveniles they won't show all their beauty but if you manage to keep them healthy, as they go into their second year of life they will reward you big time.
