Amonia

A few days ago I accidentally spilt a whole lot of food into my 16 gal tank.
I Quickly vacuumed most of it but ammonia spiked. Since then I have reduced feeding, done partial changes, cleaned the filter, and even added an additional submersible filter.

I guess it will just take a little more time to get it under control?

What are your current readings? How often are you doing water changes and how much are you changing out? When you say you cleaned the filter how did you clean it?

Right now,
Change 8 Gallons Every Day,
Add A Product Suck As: Seachem Prime Which Removes Ammonia, Nitrites, Nitrates
If You Can Add Some Bacteria You Can Buy From Your LFS
Monitor Your Levels.

When Ammonia Is 0ppm:
Go Back To Bi-Weekly Changes,
Feed By Pinching You Food
Be Careful

buy some zeolite and keep a container on hand for emergencies. it is very good at absorbing ammonia for a couple weeks. i think its sold as ammo chips or sometimes combined with carbon and called ammo carb. easily obtainable online at places like big al's and dr's foster/smith as zeolite. its added to your filter and removes the ammonia. prime locks up or converts ammonia but it is reconverted or re-released after a couple days from what iv'e come to understand. not the best choice as it doesn't actually remove or absorb ammonia. its more of a temporary bandaid for a day or two. zeolite however is a more permanant solution or at least a longer term absorbant that will actually remove it from your tank...not convert it.

The link above is for Marineland White Diamond. It looks like activated carbon but it's white. Reduces ammonia levels. I use about 1/2 cup (for my 155g tank) and keep it in my filter in a media bag. I change it every 3 weeks. I have large fish in a large tank and the fish are large waste producers. Using this will not make your tank exempt from doing water changes. Using White Diamond has not harmed my bio cycle.
