dont skimp on your filter. its the single most important piece of equiptment on your aquarium that you will buy. think about it. the filter is what alows your fish to live, survive and if adequate...thrive. the biggest mistake new aquariusts make is skimping on the filter. you cant overfilter your tank. the aquaclears are good but go with something that is 3-4X the recomended size for a 10 gallon tank. maybe an aquaclear 50 or even 70. i used to have all kinds of mysterious and lots of times not so mysterious fish deaths. after coming to realize what i was doing wrong..and upgrading my filters significantly...i have not had a fish illness or death since. the health of my tank has improved drastically.
ideally what you are looking for is a filter that pumps the most water (
GPH, gallons per hour) through the filter that holds the largest volume of filter media. it doesn't matter if its a
HOB (hang on back),
sump,
refugium, or canister. try to find one that will pump the most water through the largest amount of filter media.
