rescued Pleco

went to a friends house and they were given a 10 gallon tank. The previous owner put some water in it and killed all the goldfish, one pelco about 6 inches survived. They never turned on the filter and he had been sitting in it for about 2 weeks with no filter.
When I got him and the tank, the water was black and slimy. He kept sticking his head out of the water... (was that a sign of distress or trouble breathing?)
I transfered him to my tank at home, it is a 10 gallon too, but plan on moving him to a 55 gallon one soon.
Anyways I scrubbed and scrubbed the one tank I brought home. and have it cycling. How long do I have to wait to add fish?
I don't have a heater for the new one. I was thinking a couple of fancy goldfish and some snails... Is there any other fish that do ok in a cold tank?

Unfortunately, goldies need a minumum of 20 gallons per goldie, then ten additional per extra.

I'd go with four zebra danios. They do well in tropical or cold.

Hello. Congrats on the rescue. Here is a link to some crucial information concerning the nitrogen cycle. http://www.fishlore.com/NitrogenCycle.htm
Best of luck!

There are white cloud mountain minnows too. Don't do the goldfish thing unless you get a larger tank. There may also be some of the killifish that would be good in cool/temperate water (american flagfish?)

i know that danios, rosy barbs, CAE, and the black skirt tetra can. these fish prefer warmer water but one time (4 years ago) my heater broke and i couldn't get another heater for 3 weeks. these fish were fine and my friend keeps these fish in cold water as well.

Danios ,Rosy Barbs and White Cloud minnows will be fine in temps 64-79F as long as the temp is stable and not wildly fluctuating.
The CAE and Black Skirt need warmer temps. Because they survived doesn't mean they were in optimal conditions. I'm glad they survived since it was an equipment malfunction that caused it but lets not recommend those conditions as normal conditions to keep them in

The chinese algae eater would need more room than a 10 gallon anyway. CAE's need LOTS of room - like a minimum of 40 gallons each.

wooooow butterfly 13,000 posts is insane!?!!

its good what you did with rescuing the pleco! even better that your giving him a bigger tank!

if you havent already found something for it why dont u just set it aside for a spare? maybe a quarantine if you dont already use one? it seems i need to keep atleast 1 extra aside cuz i always end up finding something for them to be used as along the way

Good advice. A spare tank is always nice to have.
Even though that empty tank nags at us with MTS to be filled it's also fun to take your time and look around before you fill it.
