Update on Josie and Zeke

I finally received the 29 g at the LFS; unfortunately, I asked them to order Tetra Safe Start, and instead they ordered AquaSafe. *slaps forehead*

So, it looks like I'll have to wait a little longer for the quick cycling material.

Anyway, I wanted to let you guys know how I moved Josie and Zeke and get your opinions on anything I could have done better or should still do.

First, I washed my new gravel and plants and arranged them in the tank. I had the two tanks standing side by side. I siphoned out the ten gallon tank until the angelbabies had about four inches of water to swim in. Then, I added in the pitchers of water that I put Prime in and usually keep overnight. I next transferred over the heater and the filter to the new tank, bagged Josie and Zeke, and finished transferring all of the gravel and plants from the old tank.

Then, I floated Josie and Zeke for twenty minutes and let them in because they were so active and bonking the side of the bag, and I *was* using mostly the same water from the old tank, after all!

So, I now have Josie and Zeke in about 15 g in the new tank. They are swimming well and the old hierarchy seems to have transferred to the new tank. What I plan to do is add a few pitchers of water everyday until I get it up to 29 g so I won't shock them with too much new water. Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated!

new water is great for fish provided the temp is the same, and the pH isnt that much different.there isnt much beneficial bacteria in the water, its more int he filter, subtrates, and decorations....so the old water isnt doing much for the fish .....im sorry for all the questions but was your old tank fully cycled for awhile? whats the ph on the old tank and the new tank? what are the ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate readings? how longs the old tank been running? if you fill in your aquarium info, we dont have to ask so many questions

Well, the problem is that my old tank never cycled--as I said in an earlier post, I got Josie and Zeke without knowing anything about the nitrogen cycle. For a few days, I was keeping them in a fishbowl!

Anyway, I've been keeping them as comfortable as possible by doing 40 to 50% water changes with Prime every day, but I knew I would eventually have to move up from the 10 g "quick fix" tank I bought to a 30 g. I figured it would be better to move them into the big new tank while they were young and adaptable instead of when they get too big for the other tank!

My readings have stayed about the same...there have been no ammonia spikes above .25 and no nitrites and nitrates. The ph is steady at 7.4, and I keep the tank at 78 degrees.

I have got to get some Tetra Safe Start! I spent the weekend calling pet shops in Jacksonville, but I haven't found a place to buy it! I was hoping I wouldn't have to wait for it to ship...
