Tank Weight!!!

Hi Guys!

Can anyone help me out on possible tank weights when full?

We've got quite a sturdy cabinet in our room where we'd like the tank. I'm looking at a 60G tank which will pretty much be the size of the cabinet. There's probably 10cm either side. Is this gonna be feasable or will I need a specialized stand/cabinet?

I am also considering 55 and 32G tanks, if anyone can help me out on possible total weights?

Cheers,
Lar.

I'd go for a specialized aquarium stand, or you can build your own. I believe I've seen plans at www.garf.org . You can pretty much plan on about 10 lbs. per gallon when you count water, substrate, and decor.

My 25g tank weighs in between 200-250lbs wen full. So if you pick the 55g tank it will weigh around 550-600lbs. If you buy a 55g I would get something made for fish tanks. I have a 10g tank on a sturdy table and that's about the max it can hold.

This may sound stupid but can floors hold the 600lbs? I've heard about people getting their floors re-inforced, but that may be for seriously large aquariums!!!

That's not a stupid question at all LarryK. I believe that most floors can withstand the weight of a 75 gallon tank pretty easily if it's a load-bearing wall. If you go much bigger than that, a lot of people either reinforce the floors, or put the tank in a basement. For your 60 gallon, I wouldn't worry too much.

It all depends on the make up of your floor....in my previous home, a mobile home built out of sticks (as most manufactured homes are) I wouldnt trust much more than a 30 gal without re-enforcing...and no question is ever stupid

That's an excellent point! I totally didn't even think about the possiblility of a mobile home, and I agree with you on that. Honestly, our house is on a concrete slab so we don't have too many barriers on tank size! LOL
