Getting a new tank HELP!

So as u know, im not a beggenier. And im getting a 20 gallon to house my tropical fish, and whenever i transfer my fish to a new habitat, they always die! So should i introduce them as new fish into the new tank? and so i dont have to cycle the new tank, can i put some water from my old tank into my new tank? thanks

Hi Fish

The bacteria is not in the water I'm afraid it settles on the filter media plants decorations and substrate. so in order to have the tank cycle you would need to transfer some of that. as much as you can without crashing your first tank.
That is probably why your fish have died in the past, because they were takken from a cycled tank to a un-cycled one.

All you need to do is move the filter over from your old tank to your new tank at the same time that you move your fish over. If you are going to use a different filter with your new setup, run the old one with it for a couple of weeks. Moving some of the substrate over from the old tank can also help.

What size tank are the fish in that you are going to transfer ? Can you transfer all the filter, gravel, decoration, water, etc from the old tank to the new ??

There's no need to move over the water, provided the old tank is properly maintained. You're just moving dirty water at that point; most of the bacteria lives on surfaces such as filter media, gravel, etc. rather than in the water column. Just acclimate them carefully to the new tank and they will be fine.

You don't need to move the whole filter, you can move the media from it. According to a your info, you have whisper 5-15, that is pretty small for a 20g. If you have the time, try shoving some extra media into your old filter. If you can leave it a couple of weeks, set up your new tank, run your new filter and throw in some gravel and a few decorations from you 10g. Feed the ammonia (fish food or some raw shrimp), then move the media into the new filter. You will still have to really watch your water (this is all assuming some of your fish will remain in the 10g tank). Good luck

Isn't it easier just to move over the whole filter to the new tank while running the new filter with it for a couple of weeks? If it's moved over the same time as the fish, there won't be any need to feed the bacteria with an ammonia source. I've done this many times with no issues. I agree that you should test your water daily for a bit until you are things have stabilized, but my experience is that any resulting mini-cycle is quickly brought under control with a couple extra water changes.

As I mentioned at t the end of post, this was assuming some fish would be staying in the 10g. It would save moving them all, then moving some back. Good idea to always have some extra media shoved into filters in the case of a new tank, mini cycle or filter break down (as I recently learned). either way will work.

IF you are keeping both tanks running at the same time, you cannot move the filter..but you can take some of the filter media, subtrate , and decorations as stephan suggested..IF you are shutting down the 10 gal, just put it all over on the new one as others have suggested...use new condtioned water as water doesnt hold much beneficial bacteria and wont help much in the cycle process...goodluck
