Cycled-----FINALLY :)

Hello al
Guess what.....I am pretty sure I am cycled now....Yeah. I have had 0 ammonia and 0 nitrites for 1 week now

Now I have 2 questions that need to be addressed. I just left these issues until my cycle was sorted out.

1) I have white spots all over the inside of my tank- I have another thread regarding this issue. I think it hard water deposits but everyone here thinks it is something else. My tank was new when I set it up a little over 2 months ago. The spots appeared 2 or 3 days after setup. I just would like to have ideas on how to clean it. What to do with my fish? And what to do with my plants and gravel. I don't want to lose my cycle now that I have it. I have a picture if you want to see them.

2) I have developed brown algae in my tank. It is quite ugly. What can I do to control it? How do I clean it off my tank and decorations safely

Congradulations on your patience. What is the nitrate level?
The brown algae are likely diatoms. This will disappear on its own in a couple weeks. Don't know about the white spots.

Congratz!

Not sure what the white spots are but you can just wipe it off during a water change and gravel vac. No need to take out the fish.

As for the brown stuff that is diatoms. Common in new tanks. Harmless and you can just wipe if off also during a water change. Clean decorations off in bucket of tank water. It will come back but overtime it will go away. Be patient.

The white spots don't wipe off. I even have a scrubbie with a handle. It doesn't really get them off either. I can scrap them off with a finger nail or a razor blade. But there are literally hundreds of them. I have a picture if you wanna see what I mean

Here is the picture. They appeared very quickly after setup. My water is really hard. they are on all sides and surfaces of the glass on the inside. It is very ugly and distracting.

That looks nasty. Hardwater mineral deposits. I have soft water so I don't have that problem.

If you scrape it off it will just come back.....so you need to soften the water. I put a link below to what I found to do that. Not sure if it is good or not. Hopefully someone will be more helpful in this matter.
