swordtail behaviour.. normal?

Hello

I have a pregnant female who spends 80% of the day resting on the bottom of the tank. In full view, not hiding.

come feeding time...whoosh! she races around like a fish possesed. Ditto when the male comes near her.

She looks glowing but none of the other fishes lounge around all day,

is she just feeling fat, frumpy and pregnant - although she has been doing this for months... lol

Helene

now proud owner of a 300l tank

water readings normal, no change. no new changes.

Good morning. Has she been fat that long a time and not given birth? If so, she may be constipated. What I've seen recommended is feeding shelled, thawed peas cut in half. Is there a gravid spot at the anal fin?

She is very pregnant, also lemon coloured with white belly - so very pale to the point you can see the red eyes of the babies. Its not her first lot but she does seem to have been pregnant for longer than i expected if thats possible.

I hadnt considered bowels (and thats not good in a nurse lol ) so will keep an eye out.

Do you need to blanche the peas before feeding them?

Thanks for replying

Helene

I hope you end up with many fry. Yes, it would be a good idea to blanche the peas to make them a bit softer. Keep us posted!

Also, Daphnia works well as a fish laxitive. (In case your not familiar with Daphnia, it is a fishfood that you can get at the LFS)

Oh!
I tried the peas and all the fish ate them lol

have some daphnia will feed that today.

she is literally rubbing her belly on the gravel, not flicking or flashing but rather grinding it as she sits on the bottom. I like this fish. Hope the laxative works (not a concept I ever associated with fish keeping :P )

thanks again

*sigh*

peas - fed
daphnia - fed

result = even fatter fish still sitting on the bottom. Perhaps she's just a couch potato.

Do you know how old she is? The elder the female the more she will produce. The younger the less they'll produce. It just depends on age. Good Luck!
