Ammonia reading!!!!

Okay, I know an ammonia reading isn't good but I'm thrilled!! I went out of town yesterday and just got back tonight and thought I would test the water
after I got my kids to bed.

Ammonia: 0.50
nitrite: 0
nitrate: 5

How much of a water change should I do? I still only have the four zebra danio in there.

I'm waiting on a part for my gravel vac... it's like the python but the cheaper one from Walmart. I used it to fill the tank for the first time and the plastic faucet adaptor stripped, so I sent away for a metal one and won't get it until the 26th. I know I can't wait that long to do a water change, so I'm going to see if I can still syphon water for the change.

Thanks!!
Mae

PS... I hope every one has a wonderful Memorial Day weekend!!!

Hey Mae!

I know what you mean, my cycling tank is reading ammonia at 8.0! Not much of a nitrate reading though. I can't wait to stock it.

My son's teacher is giving us an empty tank, goodness...not sure I will be able to afford this one! lol!! I really want to get another betta, I'm not sure what the size is though. I hope it will work!

well okay, I did my first w/c but it wasn't 50%... more like 30% because of the extremely short hose I had to use from the gravel vac. I was able to get it syphoned my first try
so I was happy about that and I found it quite easy, but I know it will be really easy once I'm able to hook it back up to the sink. I added API Stress Coat+ as directed, it says on the bottle is removes chlorine, chloramines and ammonia in tap water. The four danio seem to be doing good, swimming and chasing each other as usual. I can't wait to be able to add four or five more just to have a school of them.

I didn't do any thing with the gravel with this w/c but it still stirred up a lot of nasty decaying fish food and what not. When will I be able to do a good gravel vac?

Thanks,
Mae

Vacuum half your tank's substrate during tomorrow's water change and then vacuum the other half during Saturday's PWC, then on Sunday do the first half again, on Monday..... you can guess by now! Good luck and hang in there!! It will get better, I promise!!
Yes, and a good Memorial Day to you and all and try and give a little time during the day to reflect on the reason for Memorial Day and remember all those who have served and especially those who didn't make it home.

Mae

It has recently come to light on this forum, that Stress Coat+ does NOT detox/remove ammonia or nitrites. Apparently, there is a small amount of ammonia created in the dechlotination process and that is the only ammonia that is nuetralized by Stress Coat+

So it looks like Prime is the water conditioner of choice if you want to detox ammonia/nitrites.
