Gourami and Angel good tank mates for a 38 Gal.?

Hi Everyone,

I've been reading on this forum for a little while now and enjoy it very much. As my title states I am wondering if an Angel and a Gourami would be decent tank mates. My angel is still very young (his "body" is about the size for a 50 cent piece).

I have a 38 gal right now (day dream plenty for at least a 55), and though it's fully stocked (in my oppinon since I'm litterally having to do water changes at least once a week if not 2x's), I am looking to the future when I will be able to do something different. I currently have my Angel, 6 GloFish (yes, the Zebra Danio's that have been genetically altered to glow -it was a gift for after my son's tonsilectomhy this past winter), 1 remaining fully mature Mickey Mouse Platy, and 5 "baby" Platy's that are about 2 and 3 months of age, and 4 cories (2 julii cories and 2 albino cories), and 3 otto's.

I'm not sure when I'm going to be able to give away my GloFish and Platy's but would like to at least get rid of the platy's when they're older. And the GloFish are very active and not sure if they'd take too much space later once the Angel get bigger -advice would be good on this too. They don't seem to bother the Angel at this point, they're just more crazy (I call them our Wack-a-do fish as they're constantly playing/moving about) and sometimes it seems the Angel just doesn't seem to be "in the mood" to be in the middle of they're play.

This is long, I'm sorry for the post, but what can I say... I'm excited at the prospect. I was really bummed for a long time wanting to do an Oscar in there and coming to the conclusion that my tank is too small for one and this is the first "new" idea that's got me thinking. My tanks cycled, and has been up for a while without crashes, so as long as I keep up my waterchanges I'm good (gets high in the nitates -I'm not up for doing a planted tank as yet, maybe someday, but until I'm ready I'm holding back).

Thanks in advance for your advice, stories, experiences. I'm looking forward to reading them.

Sounds like a interesting tank. I had glofish too. They are very entertaining and active little fish. I loved them. I know that people have had gourmai's and Angles with no problems but I wouldn't recommend it. There could be some aggression issues there. They just don't seem to be good tankmates. I'm sure other members will be along to help out too.

I'm probably going to be really glad that I posted the question. I am not a person who likes aggression in my tanks (especially since I only have room for the two I have at this point). I know it's nature, but I have too soft of a heart for the underdog. Thank you for your reply.

Oh, and I love your quote. I love quotes too and yours is fantastic!

Hi Newguy101,

I'm wondering, do you think it's a personality thing? (Like with betta's and community tanks, etc.) What kind of Gourami's do you have in there with your Angel? Do you think it's partly due to your Angel's size (is he larger or smaller than the Gourami's)? I would love to kow how you're tanks set up, etc. mostly out of curiousity (I LOVE looking at other peoples tanks) but also to see if there's a way you're providing space(s) in a correct way that's helping your fish get along. My Angel loves to come to the front of the tank, but my GloFish (Danios) are so *crazy* having there tag games that it can sometimes discourage him.

Just curious, and thank you so much for your reply even if you don't reply to this one.

Hi Carebear, I love quotes too. I just this one was too fitting so I had to have it..lol.
I'm just like you when it comes to aggression I really dont' like it. I feel to bad for the one being beat up on. My tanks with aggressive fish are species only tanks for that reason. Angelfish are cichlids, so they can be aggressive little buggers. Allot has to do with personality, just depends if your fish are high strung or laid back. But a tank can go months without any problems and then one day you'll find one that's been beat up. The betta is a good example. It's kinda like a time bomb.

Newguy101 ~ I would love to see pics of your tank! As I mentioned I love seeing others tanks for ideas, inspiration, and just how they look with the type of fish they have. Can't wait to see them if you're able to post them

CHoffman ~ This is a real concern for me (aggression) so it'll be something I will be keeping attention to my Angel's personality as he matures, at this point he seems to be a pretty happy-go-lucky kinda guy (or gal I guess, I don't know why I've assumed a gender for him) it's just when the goofy Glolites have extra energy (like me and my kids... haha funny to me) he just steps back a bit to watch and stay out of their craziness. And anyway, I may need to keep my mind open for a while longer (which is fine -more learning and research time) for other combos that may be interesting -either that or make sure that I'm able to find a spot for another tank for the "just in case" senerio. I had one betta (my first named "Freddie" 5 yrs ago (had him for 2 years) and he lived happily and fine in my 10 gal. community tank, but the 2nd betta (Big Red) which was to take Freddies place in the community tank when I got Freddie his own home in his "aging years" (and a tumor that never bothered him but the current made it seem uncomfortable for me to watch him) Big Red was *not* a community type betta... he didn't get the chance to do any major damage but enough for me to know that he needed his own home too. Lesson learned -personalities just like us humans are different with each fish -some more pronounced personalities than others -like humans.
As for the quotes... yours is *completely* fitting for these forums and again I love it!

Take Care Both of You and Happy Fish Keeping to All!
