| Scared Fish? One of my platies is worrying me.
She's always been the smaller one, looks rather thin with the dorsal fin always lowered. The guy platy doesn't look at her much, always chasing after her tank mate.
Either way, she's ALWAYS hiding under something.
Usually it was the Anubias' largest leaf, but lately under the filter spray bar.
She's very quiet and barely moves.
However when i tried to feed her, she shot out and ate like the rest.
What's wrong with her? |

| Well they were in a tank full of guys, only 2 girls.
You can imagine that one of them is pregnant...
-
Will she recover in time? She looks permantly stressed, not to mention scrawny. |

| can you get a breeder box and maybe give her a smaller space to try to recover? hang it over the side of your tank? add a big fake kinda leaf for her to relax on...that way she can feel safe maybe? coming from a tank of all men and just the 2 of the girls, im surprised shes alive..poor thing |

| Update:
I haven't obtained a breeder box yet.
Today she was lying down in a crevice in the gravel, I thought she was dead but as soon as I went to have a closer look she moved.
When I fed them, she fed like the rest, swimming very quickly...so I doubt she's sick or anything.
Should I try to put in more hiding places? |

| Liama- iwould so she feels a little more safe-and have you checked her for parisites? sometimes a fish will dart to feed when it has parisites-but just to check her. hope this helps a bit-and as a point of interest, have you checked the nitrates? as i got an email-this morning and it seems some established tanks are suffering from nitrate poisioning. Just a thought-and hope it all helps you bella |

| I do have nitrates, my source has nitrates but I'm trying to keep them down with the plants I have. The other fish aren't affected at all, all are lively looking.
How do you check for parasites? |

| Just watch for anything moving on the fish change in habit, change in stools of the fish, eating, swimming , weight loss, ect; anything from diff then usual-also any lumps on skin of fish and if all checks out maybe she just needs some good food and some more hiding places. Liama-one thing i suggest is to get to know your fish well as you are doing-you have deteced something is wrong as you know your fish and go with your gut-you will usually be right lol and Shawnie has excellant advice as well. Once you know your fish well-you will detect any illness or not, if all checks out she needs some time and good food-What are you feeding? And ofcourse a nice cycled tank to call home lol good luck with her, hope your baby will be well.-bella Last edited by shih-tzu mom; April 24th, 2009 at 07:26 AM.

| She's been here for around a week and two days, so have no idea what is 'usual'. She doesn't have any weird marks on her skin or anything.
Any suggestions for 'good food' ? Should I try giving her some cucumber or something? |

| Liama; If, you suspect constipationion in your fish you could try some deshelled peas or spinach just pop in microwave for a few min; and take off the shells of the peas and feed 1/2 pea or a little spinach.Hikari; makes a good food and some frozen blood worms are good food for her to give some strength. Garlic-gard or garlic-juice is good 1-time for the week to build her immune system and also vitamins lol -vita-chem was highly recomended to me for your baby-and some time for her to build up her imune system as you don't know how she was treated before you got her!. and i'm sure your baby will improve. and Shawnie's suggestion was excellant for a breeders box-if you don't have one you can make one simply enough lol the DIY section on FL will help you there. Good Luck Liama; hope all this helps your fish-bella |

| I tried to feed a deshelled pea... they nibbled at it for half a second and ignored it. The cories seem to like it though.
So they don't like peas or carrots -_- I'll try spinach next time. We have garlic here so I could try to squeeze the juice out of some. |

| Liama-it only takes a drop once a week and that should help her immune system and the vitamins also help as long as she took a little if she is constipated it will help her.bella |

| Hmm, not much of an update, she looks REALLY scrawny.
I'll put a picture of her, and I'll put a picture of her tankmate, her fins look immensly small - even the fins at the back.
Doesn't seem like they were ripped though, stunted growth or something? <- her tank mates |

| Sorry about the third post - but I really need some help.
It's gone from bad to worse, now she's not eating... she's IGNORING the food (even when I put it right next to her), she even moved a flake away so she could pass.
I bought a breeder... should I put her in it? Does that still sound like a good idea? |

| I had a male platy that looked like her... tail always droopy and scrawny. I never did find out what was wrong with him. I suspected that the other platies were being bullies... but that doesn't sound like your problem. My other thought was that he was scrawny from the beginning so maybe he had a problem before I even got him. I couldn't really tell you what the problem was. I hope your girl gets better. Keep us informed.

| BTW I think putting her in a breeder sounds like a good idea... that way you can really see what she is eating and how she is doing.... but I don't really know... just an opinion.

| Put her in the breeder, she look sad and doesn't move. What on earth is wrong with her? She wont' touch the food.
I'll put a bit of Elodea with her, might make her feel more secure?
She doesn't look like she'll survive much longer. |

| No, Liama; she doesn't the only thing you can do is keep her comfortable while you have her-she was likely sick when you got her. Wish for the best for her. You can try some frozen bood worms to see if she will take them lol and just keep her comfortable. bella |
