seeding a tank

Hello just wondering if anyone knows how long it takes to seed a filter, if you put it on a well established tank. I just got some new shrimpys so I'm going to stick them in one of my 10's temporally. But i want to set up 2, 5 gals for a dedicated invert tanks. I am going to hook up the filters to the 29 gall to get some good bacteria and move some live plants into the 5's.

cheers

Ryan

I would give it a couple of weeks to seed up. The 29 does not look to have that big a bioload in it unless the Neon and Khulis are in really big schools.

I would still be inclined to go for 10-14 days.

If what your talking about placing a sterile filter with new media on an established tank in order to seed the filter, it is going to take some time but it will happen sooner if you can place some used established media up stream of the the new filter media so that the water flow carries from the old to the new accelerating the process.

Well i have more than one option i do have one extra filter running on the divided betta tank 1 filter per side as well as i keep sponges on 2 of the filter intakes, baby shrimp get sucked up easy. I also do stuff in extra filter media on 2 of my filters that i could steal some to help seed.

I am using new media for the 2 newly to bee set up tanks since they have been broken down for a couple of months.

I always used a bacteria start like superbac or cycle applied directly to the filter pad would probably be really helpful. You can also use it to lower a nitrite spike.

Unfortunately they don't offer anything like that around me :-(

I wouldn't suggest using Cycle. It contins the wrong type of bacteria and will compete with your beneficial bacteria for the ammonia.
Do a search on the forum, you'll see how many cycles crashed if you start using cycle then stop.

Put extra filter sponges or run your new filters as you said in your established filter for at least 2 weeks, depending on the bio load of your established tank.
I even keep extra sponges tucked behind my filter intake in case I need to quick cycle a tank.

Thank you carol, i'd wondered about the cycle. I used it as an example, i know superbac is great. But most people will use what they can buy locally or simply like the look of. I've heard about alot of products ;new to me, on this forum.

I'm Lucy, but mistaking me for Carol is a compliment.

In the past I've run brand-new filters on established tanks for two weeks to seed, and then moved them to other tanks where they were the only filter, and have yet to have an issue.

Thanks for the tips i went and picked up some extra filter media and am starting the seeding process now, i have a good time line to work with 2 weeks (lets hope) till the shrimpy tanks are good to go.

I hope to have the 2 5's ready to go tonight with live plants and sand will try to get some pic's up if the sand clears.
