New Fishkeeper in the family

My daughter Camila talked me (piece of cake) and her mother (thumbs up!!) out with the idea that she wants a female betta for herself in her bedroom.

I found this 1.5gal tank. What do you think?

aw congrats

i've had one of those before (not the little mermaid but made by the same company ) and IMO they're a bit too small for a betta, and it's hard to heat them effectively. you can get a 5 gallon kit for about the same price (the 1.5 was about $25 if i remember right, plus a heater, my 5 gallon kit was about $30 plus a heater) which provides a lot more space

Def. not that tank, too small.
I know it appeals to kids but get the 5g kit and decorate the inside with Little Mermaid (or whatever characters she's into) cake decorations!
The 5g mini bow comes in different colors and as your daughter gets older she can change the decorations to suit her.

Yup, to small. 2.5 would be the minimum. And as Lucy said, they sell lots of little kid themed decorations if thats the main reason she wants it.

Thank you all for your feedback (and how quick it was!)

I might purchase the tank just for the decoration which I could place in a 2.5 pink framed (I believe there was an 8gal pink also available gotta check that out tomorrow!) I saw in another store... I will keep the 1.5gal for small fish hospital use or raising newborn fry or... (no need to worry about that, we'll figure something out, I'm sure).

I was concerned about the tank volume. Giving my girl a tank with Ariel (her favorite Disney princess) and Sebastian (we make fun with "Under the sea") is a must for me. What can I say... she's my little girl.

PS You can imagine how grateful I am that she asked to keep her own fish... and on top of that a female betta? I live for moments like this and you fishlorians play your part for this happening in my life.

Yep, I can imagine. Like when my boy asked to have an aquarium, then one of my girls asked for one, then another girl asked for a betta (that one's still on the back burner, priorities got in the way). Doesn't it feel wonderful to have the opportunity to share with our children, and have our children share with us? I'm so happy she's getting her very own fish to take care of, she's gonna do great. Congratulations to you both!!!

So cute!!

Good call on stealing the decoration from the tank and using it for something else. A 2.5 or 5 gallon minibow would be good. I bought a new filter for mine though because I didn't like how much space it was taking up inside the tank (also wasn't convinced it was anything but a bargain basement filter).

We shall await photos.

Thats awesome pepe!!! And I'm not going to lie...I'm a little jealous.

My oldest is three and she loves both of our fishtanks. She is continually asking her mom is she and her sister can have a tank of their own in there room.

Update: I won a medal!

Hi. I end up getting the 1.5gal "cube" Ariel & Sebastian tank. I'm likely going to upgrade to a 4.5gal (won't be difficult since it's pink, her favorite color and comes with a mermaid I couldn't ID hugging a seahorse).

I just couldn't wait and came home las Wednesday with the tank, having second thoughts as if I should hid the tank until I got the 4.5gal... I couldn't. Camila was awake (close to 9:00PM).

She was so happy (how can someone ever forget those moments when a young kid genuinely smiles?) as she helped me open the box that when she saw it assembled she ran to her room, open her closet, took out a little box (she, unlike her father is really organized!) and brought with her a "gold" medal with the word "WINNER". I was of course peeking at her. She comes with this medal (in a blue-white-red ribbon) back to me and says: Daddy, you won this one today!

That happened last Wednesday night.

We added water to the tank that night and next day, Thursday we began fishless cycle.

I post some pics of this process, knowing you will enjoy them. Thanks again fishlorians for encouraging me in experiencing moments like this.
