I heard these were good for a freshwater tank so I bought this and used it on my HOT Magnum. I could never get it adjusted right so it never really worked. It didn't really fit the magnum and it didn't fit the marineland c-series at all. I don't use it at all now. It's really not something you need.

This is to remove any substances from surface of water such as film which may build up on top. If you dont have any, no need and definitely not a good gadget for planted tank (floating leaves will clog)

Dont throw it out though. It will probably will work well on Fluval Canister or match the Intake tube size as I have used Eheim Surface Extractor and it worked well on Eheim Canister.

I have the same skimmer for my 26g freshwater....It's working great. I have it attached to my Aqua Clear 70. I'm not sure these were meant to be used on canister filters. I could very well be wrong though.

Actually as product info states, it is specifically made to be used with Fluval Canisters.
Any pics on your DIY modifications as pics are worth thousands words? Perhaps someone can learn to use with HOB when and if possible!

Does anyone know if the this allows co2 to escape through surface agitation?

I'm not actually sure if mine is a Fluval or Aqua Clear. Both pictures on the page that i gave a link to look exactly the same. I ordered mine online and I can't remember what store I got it from. It doesn't have a name on the actual product.

Mine didn't clog from floating leaves, the water just went in anyway. It has an opening at the bottom so it will still get water and not burn up your filter. If I ever do use the thing it's after a good pruning so I can catch all the floating leaves. I'm sure that could clog eventually though too.

Like I said though I don't think I ever got mine to work right anyway. When I bought it I thought it was designed to work with standard sizes.

It's not on there at all anymore. I had the accordian type tube stuck in the intake of the Magnum but it wasn't a good seal at all. None of the other fittings for the skimmer fit either. And no matter which way I turned the adjuster stick on the top (or how far) it always sucked a lot of air. I didn't really need it anyway though.

http://www.thatpetplace.com/pet/prod/215392/product.web check it out. Different name but exactly the same or so it appears. I added a pre-filter sponge to the bottom intake. It connects directly to the intake tube on my Aqua Clear.

Any pics in operation? Dont you get air pocket thus reducing filters capacity?

Sorry I'm not able to get pics. I still use a 35mm Nikon I haven't had any problem with air pockets...when I hear air going through the Aqua Clear sucks it all out and runs fine. I"ve had to adjust the flow control a time or two but other than that it's worked great.

Check my profile pics of the 26g....you can see it behind the plants and the tube connecting to the filter going up. It's in the right hand corner.
