| How Shall I Sort these fish? Hi, I have been keeping fish for over 10 years now, but turned serious recently. Here in India, it is very difficult to get any guidance in fish keeping, as even the LFS salesperson does not know much...
I have four aquaria, as described below.
Aquarium Type: Freshwater Planted Tank
Aquarium Size: 10 G
Plants: 4 Amazons, 15 twigs of Cabomba , about 1 foot each, 2 Screw plants (6 inch leaf blades, like common grass) driftwood: 2 pieces, 1 1foot long and one about 8 inches and plank like. (In the aquarium for 8 9 months now)
Livestock: Fish: 20+ Guppies, 4 Zebra Danios (2F, 2M), 2 Rainbow Sharks, 1 Siamese Fighter, 1 Eel
Lighting: 26W white tube light
Filter: Biological, occasionally manual siphon
Aquarium #2
Type: freshwater fish Only
Size: 5G
Livestock: 2 Iridescent Sharks
Lighting: 15 W Yellow Bulb
Filter: Manual Siphon
Aquarium #3
Type: Freshwater Fish Only
Size: 1 G Bowl
Livestock: 6 Black Molly fry
Lighting: 15 W Bulb
Filter: Manual Siphon
Aquarium #4
Type: Freshwater Fish Only
Size: 5 G Pentagonal base
Livestock: Gave away 2 gold fish, now empty
Lighting: 15 W Bulb
Filter: Manual Siphon
All the tanks have round stone pebbles and about 1 cm sized rocks as substrates, and getting some laterite in two weeks shall I change/add to it?
I could not find any kit or aid to get nitrate or ammonia readings.
I wish to sort the fish to avail them with better conditions.
Thanks in advance... Last edited by ckarta; April 1st, 2009 at 02:37 PM.

| Hmm, right the Siamese fighter (" betta") should get a tank on its own, give it the 5G.
I wouldn't put anything in the 1G bowl to be honest, its horrible for the fish.
Otherwise I can't think of any combinations which won't be overstocked... you're too stocked. |

You have 28 fish in a 10 gallon tank ! Too many !
What is a biological filter ?
Aquarium #2
Type: Freshwater Fish Only
Size: 5G
Livestock: 2 Iridescent Sharks
Lighting: 15 W Yellow Bulb
Filter: Manual Siphon *******************************
2 sharks in a 5 gallon ! Too small ! They can get up to 18 inches !
No filter ? How many times a day do you do water suction ?
Aquarium #3
Type: Freshwater Fish Only
Size: 1 G Bowl
Livestock: 6 Black Molly fry
Lighting: 15 W Bulb
Filter: Manual Siphon ***************************************
No way !
Aquarium #4
Type: Freshwater Fish Only
Size: 5 G Pentagonal base
Livestock: Gave away 2 gold fish, now empty
Lighting: 15 W Bulb

| Oh dear, I agree with Llama, not much you can do with your size tanks and the fish you have.
I hate to say this but the only combo I see working with what you have is to move the betta into the empty 5g.
You'll either need much larger tanks or need to re-home many of your fish.
The fish in tank # 1 should be moved into the very minimum of 55g's (not sure about the eel fitting)
The fish in tank # 2 need a huge tank..according to this: Iridescent Shark need at the minimum 300g. They can grow really large. If kept in too small of a tank their growth will be stunted causing health problems.
Tank # 3, I agree with Llama, not suitable for any fish. The stock in this tank are more suited to a 10g.
Tank #4 needs a filter then as stated above, put the betta in there.
You can order a test kit on line.
Sorry I couldn't give you any better suggestions. Last edited by Lucy; April 1st, 2009 at 03:04 PM.

| rnbw sharks , iresdc sharks, eel, pleco, all get too large for a 20 gallon honestly you should give them away becouse rnbw's are territorial and will chase other fish around and stress till the point of death.
iredescent sharks get huge and goes better ina pond.
Eel not so sure didint mention the species.
Other than that you can probobly sort out the guppies to 10 each 5 gallon or just buy a 30 gallon to fit your guppies, betta, mollies, and zebras in.gl'z |

| Thank you all, Now
I would sell the iredc sharks
The eel is very small (about 1.5 inch) ie not larger than a Guppy
I haven't seen any of my rainbow sharks chase any other fish till date
Sadly its not possible for me to get another aquarium for a long time, at least a year, so would consider giving away the fish... |

I understand how hard it is to get rid of fish when you really like them. For the health and welfare of the fish tho, getting rid of them seems like the only thing you can do at this point. You seem to really love fish keeping and maybe you can save up for a future bigger tank and start fish keeping all over again. Best of luck... |

| Mmm, this stinks. I think that your best bet would be to try and rehome the larger fish, (including the ones who will get bigger). Its good that your trying to do whats best for your fish, though. |

| Welcome to fishlore. It's too bad how hard it is to get good advice...sorry you'll have to give away some of your fish.
What I would suggest: 10gal - the danios OR several guppies (get rid of most of them)
5gal - betta (siamese fighter)
5gal - molly fry
Make sure all the tanks have filters and you are doing weekly water changes. |

Noe I'd deffinitely rehome / sell the sharks, the Eel and almost all the guppies, and then only try something new... |

| Good news!!
1. Found a much larger home for the Ir. sharks, giving them to a friend who has a 13' X 6' X 3' ie around 1450 G pond!
2. Managed an old but undamaged bath tub (6' X 3' X 1' I'd keep water 1' only. ie 112G!), so moving all guppies, Zebra danios, the eel and the rainbow shark to it.
3. Got 2 more 5G acrylic bottles (14" diameter), what can I keep in it?
4. Will get 1 more betta for existing 5 G. |

| 2 sharks in a pond, that is awesome! hope you dont keep any goldfish in there. your friend should put some of your guppies in his pond as well, they can feed the sharks with their offspring.
did you get the bath tub setup with filtration? |

| No, I haven't got any filtration yet, but I am making an external filter for it, using a 150 GPH submersible pump and an external sump, will set the tub when filter's ready, a month or so... |
