IMHO: Two gallon of water per inch of fish

I think my tank works better and the fish are happier if I go by a "2 gallon of fish per inch of fish".

The one inch per gallon guideline is meant to be the upper limit. Less is usually better, though there are always exceptions, usually with extremely social fish.
