There could be a number of answers. Some fish will do this naturally and it may also be a result of a swim bladder problem. A swim bladder problem can be a result of an infection which there are medications to treat this and it can also be the result of a dietary issue. You can try soaking flake food prior to feeding as well as feeding some greens such as skinned peas.

Is he showing any other signs of stress such as redness around the gills, gasping, twitching, torn fins, or irregular fins?

For better help please fill out your aquarium information. At the top of page click “My Settings” and select “Edit Aquarium Info”. Fill out as much information as you can. You will get much better help by doing so.

is he doing it all the time?
sometimes my angels do it when they're sizing eachother up or get scared by something.
they usually do it for a few seconds and then go back to swimming normally.
if yours is doing it constantly that's a bit worrying
good luck with him

My angel does this all the time but its because he only has one eye ( a birth defect ) so he swims so he can see best.... looks very odd i must agree but he is a healthy, if bad tempered fish. Hope it all sorts out for you.

It sounds like perhaps it’s his normal dormant state. Most likely an experienced angle keeper will better advise you. Since you mentioned he’s otherwise behaving normally (swimming upright with the lights on, eating normally and no other indications of stress) I don’t think you need to be immediately concerned.

I’m not an angle keeper but there are many here and I’m sure they will advise you soon. A lot of members here are from North America (as I am) and it’s currently 4:30am EST. so it may be a few hours before you get more experience help.

I wish you and your angle the best!
