Discus fish

Can anyone tell me if they have or have had discus fish and how they are to look after. I have a 72 G tank and it's still cycling. I am not planning on adding them until I am positive conditions are perfect but I would love to have them in my tank eventually, I know the water temperature needs be hgher 86' and as a result they are pretty much the only species I can keep . I guess what I am worried about is the hardiness of them.

Welcome to fishlore!!!! They are considered the hardest freshwater tropical fish to keep. They need at least 82 degrees, but the water conditions need to be pristeen. Once you have your tank cycled and ready for these fish, just keep on top of the maintainence and you should be fine. They are IMO the most beautiful freshwater tropical fish!!!

Discus are best kept in a species tank or with certain species of tetras or cories that are tollerant of high temperatures. They prefer soft water, but can be acclimated to hard water if you do a slow drip acclimation. Large (50 percent or more) twice weekly water changes are generally enough for them. Make sure that you buy them from a reputable source. I have seen many people trying to sell stunted or sick discus for astronomical prices.

i'd look into buying them from a breeder instead of just a store, they're likely to be a lot healthier

Yup I agree The more expensive breeders usually have the better quality fish. Unfortunately with discus you have to fork out the money for nice fish.
