Newbie needs help on filter and stocking

Hello,

Just got my new fish tank 29 gallon and I'm sure glad I found this site before I started putting fish into it. I have a couple questions I got a bio wheel 200 filter on the recommendation of the fish store but I see a lot of people having issues with the should I get a different filter?

When the cycle is done and I can add fish are these fish OK together and how many of each can I put into the tank? Halequin Rosbora, X ray Pristella tetra, and one candy stripe pleco.

Thanks

you could have 6 rasboras. 6 tetras and one candy stripe pleco and you would be stocked perfectly

Hi welcome to Fish Lore
I moved your question to the beginners section since you have 2 different things you want addressed.

The tetras are schooling fish and do better in groups of 6 or more.
I looked up the candy stripe pleco (gorgeous fish, btw), as far I can see, your stocking should be ok if you choose only 6 of each tetra.
It would be a good idea to wait for other members opinions.

Sorry, I can't help with your filter question.

We're glad you joined, enjoy the forum.

Thanks everyone for the help I'm going to stick with the bio wheel. But now i have another question I was at another LFS and they told me I should use the 280 instead of the 200 they said i needed to filter at least that for a 29 gallon tank Im confused?

what does it say for the GPH (gallons per hour)? you want an 8x turnover, so for a 29 gallon tank the filter should be rated for at least 230 GPH

the 200 is rated at 200 gph so I should get the 280 I think its 280 gph

Hi slm and welcome too fish lore... You can allways get a secand filter too add to your tank it is allways better too over filter then not have enough and it will come in handy when you do filter cleanings you can change one at a time and cut the chance of a mini cycle... Just rinse the filter media in tank water you have removed while doing your WC...Hope this helps Rob

I use a Penguin 330 Bio-wheel for my 29 gallon tank. I love it. very low mant. Has 2 slots for sponge type filter media as well as 2 baskets that slide in for for other filter media. Its nice because it lets you change out media on one side while still keeping the good bacteria going on the other. That way you just switch back and fourth every time you clean the filter.

Everyone has thier own opinon of what type of filter they use making it more of a personal preference.

Cant help you on the stocking question. Im at that point right now and have a few ideas just from reading this site.

Good Luck!

I have an Aqua Clear 50 and it keeps my 29g perfectly clear. Knock on wood but after the loss of two Platy's put in a little too early, I've had no fish die or with signs of illness. So, if you're going to change, the AC 50 is a good choice. I use Bio-Max, Sponge and Charcoal, the latter getting a monthly change. I think my tank is stocked about right.

Thanks for the help interesting how a filter rated for a 50 gallon tank doesn't have enough flow for 29 gallons (8 -10 gph per gallon) I'm liking the emperor 280 the two separate pumps and feels more sturdy than the penguin version although I do like the 350 dual wheels decisions decisions.
