| Snail takeover!! Snails have suddenly taken over my tank!! I don't know where they came from?!?!
HELP! How do I safely get rid of them? Someone said to buy a goldfish, but we have tropical fish. Can I do this?
I just want them gone--ASAP! Thanks!

| nope, no goldies for that tank
the easiest way to get rid of them is to attach a piece of cucumber or lettuce to a weight (a rock in your tank will work) and leave it there overnight. in the morning there should be lots of baby snails on it, and you can just take it out and throw it away |

| Buy a ten gallon tank, Use used filter media to quickely get it going. Get 1-2 DP's in there, then catch as many snails as you can and feed em to the puffers . Unless they're Malaysian Trumpet Snails. |

| You can try to put a piece of lettuce in the tank over night. In morning it should be full of snails.
Try feeding a bit less also. |

| Or, if you live by anyone who keeps puffers, give the snails to them, they'd appreciate it |

| I am just so freakin mad about this. Lol... I really really didn't want any snails!! Grrr!!!
We have baited them with lettuce...I guess I'm going to start looking into loaches. Are they schoolers? Do I need more than one? What's the smallest I can get? Thanks so much, ya'll!! |

| Get an assassin snail. Yes you will still have a snail but only one as he will eat the others. I can live with one...I cant live with 30. I dont think loaches do well in a 20 gln...someone correct me if I am wrong. I tried the bait technique, the squash move, nothing has worked. It controls but doesn't get rid of them. LOL
I have managed to get rid of mine during my fishless cycle but I wouldn't do it with fish. ALGAEFIX. 2 doses one full and one half three days later. Cleared the green water, rid of snails. My plants are fine and my cycle stayed the same. Hopefully they don't bounce back! 4 days snail free. |

| so if i get a BIG snail, he will eat the others? This sounds too good to be true....
especially since my friend is a petsmart manager, and I may be able to get a snail "on loan" lol, keep him, fix the problem, and send him back to find his own happy family!
it will take some serious begging...but MAYBEEE i can do this. |

| Sorry about the double post but I noticed your aquarium age is 3 days. I wouldn't add any more fish until you are cycled. Do read about the nitrogen cycle. Best wishes!
Here is some info on the assassin or bumble bee snail. http://www.theaquariumwiki.com/Anentome_helena Last edited by Lucy; March 17th, 2009 at 09:13 AM.

| i wouldn't get any loaches for your tank, IF you have a 20 LONG as opposed to a 20 high, then you may be able to get three kuhli loaches, depending on the other fish you have in the tank, but i wouldn't recommend it.
if you have live plants that's almost positively where they came from, they hitchhike on the plants into your tank.
if you don't have any fish in the tank you can break it down and bleach the whole thing to get rid of them all. |

| Kuhli loaches don't eat snails from what I understand though. Their mouths are too small. I would say assassin/bumblebee snails is your best bet for a natural solution. Sometimes one has to fight fire with fire.
Granted I don't want to ever need assassin snails but deep down I think it would be fun watch them pig out if I ever did get a snail explosion inside one of my tanks. |

I haven't tried them yet though I have read several threads in various forums about their snail hunting "talent" lol
As I mentioned I am doing a fishless cycle and used algae fix twice and it took care of my snail problem.(So far) I dont think I would use it with fish in the tank even though it claims to be safe. |
