Stock ideas

I have had my current setup for about a year. I have a well established tank with thriving fish, shrimp and snails. I have been dissappointed in the growth of my fish so I'm planning on gifting them to someone who will take very good care of them (neighbor) or just getting them in a new tank (MTS on the way =D) anyway I saw some dinosaur eels at the dreaded wal-mart, and began pondering the repercussions of getting a couple. I decided against it due to the fact that they are typically aggressive. but this got me thinking of getting something new, something a bit more rewarding than what I have. Because even though I love my pearls taking care of them has become a bit more of a chore than a pleasure. I'm basically asking for a few stock options that will be attractive, will still rewarding in a way that the fish I get will still show me some kind of attention. even if its just a way of getting to food. So any ideas?

P.S.-29 gallon tank, water is a bit hard.

Well, if you want a challenge, you could get one green spotted puffer. They are very interactive, and tons of fun! They are a bit challenging though, and need brackish to marine water. But if you want personable, that's the way to go!

I'm really considering the rams. I bought one before but he got some type of worm and died within the week. That and some schooling fish would be nice but i'm not sure what to get. I liked the longfin zebra danios I had once but the colors are a bit dull, and I haven't really seen much that schools tightly with longer flowing fins. So any help on that end?

If you want a tight school tetras are the tightest I've seen. They don't have the flowing fins, but my red eye tetras don't leave each other at all in my 75 gallon.

I will look into whats available at my LFS. I was never really interested in tetras, they just seem so stiff and scared all the time. I don't know. I do know that they have played with the danios to get some other colors out of them. Maybe I can find some that are natural that appease me.(not tattooed) I guess the longer fins are more important to me than I thought =S. Then again I might have a change of heart with the little guys with shorter fins.

Ended up with some yellow/green/blue guppies that are mesmerizing in the light, and a small school of zebra danios. I am very happy right now. The danios get playful and adventurous randomly, making the tank constantly enjoyable. especially when the guppies turn in the light and it looks like deep green foil shines through their skin, and my gouramis are comfortable with them. Now its time for the final addition. a crawdad. Or a crayfish for those who made it out of the deep south.

congrats! i'd be wary of the crayfish though, you may wake up to find one of your guppies or danios missing!

I've looked into it and Everything I've found says that crayfish won't live long in a tank running about 82 degrees. I've been getting repeated listing of an ideal 72 degrees. So I don't know If I can get one. Any advice on this would be appreciated, and don't worry about warning me about it eating my fish, I only plan on getting a smaller one if I can at all.

The only thing I have to say about the crayfish is to agree with Alex. They will eat your fish if they can.

I actually run the pets dept at a walmart with live fish so I take offense to that, I take care of my tanks at walmart much like mine at home, actually slightly more religiously. Heres an idea though, once you cycle your tank try and get your hands on a pair of German Blue Rams (Butterfly Cichlids) They are one of the more colorful f/w fish. But because they are from fast moving waters they need an established tank. Then look into getting some killifish, corys, and some black neons. Think of your tanks in levels, top, mid, and bottom, and stock accordingly so there is activity all over.
