| Can I feed ham to my Fish? It's probably a really stupid question...
I have some leftover ham in my fridge (that shredded ham you get from the supermarket to put on pizza) can I feed it to my fish, I want to give them a bit of variety LOL |

| If its a piranah, or other really aggressive meat eating carnivore. Though it prolly isn't the best for them, there is a lot of salt in ham. I would stick to feeder fish and such if you have big carnivores.
Though I think we have all entertained the idea of tossing a pound of ground beef into a piranah tank, it would look like feeding time at the city aquarium in the shark tank. Last edited by SammyJ; March 8th, 2009 at 04:04 AM.

| i'd say no, there are probably lots of preservatives and other things that aren't so good for them.
however, you can make your own live foods which are very healthy for your fish and variation is definitely the key, try feeding fresh veggies every so often (cucumber, zucchini, squash, de-shelled pea, etc) and frozen bloodworms and frozen brine shrimp as well. http://www.plantedtank.net/forums/fi...food-fish.html |

| Frozen brine is one of my favorites to feed my fish. Its good for the little baby guppie as well. I brew up a big batch and just make ice cubes. Melt one down and then use a baster or other such device to suck the brine up and watch the fish go nuts. |

| ha ha yeah I guess I was getting a little desperate for ideas.
no piranahs but some pretty carnivorous angelfish!
SammyJ- Where do you get all the brineshrimp from? Here they only sell it frozen in little packets at the LFS and it's pretty expensive, I do give it as a treat though. |

| I use a DIY hatchery and buy the eggs either online or at a local fish store. You can prolly hit up ebay or other online sources for enough eggs to hatch out billions and billions of brine. Honestly the instant ocean sea salt is the most expensive part and I only use that because I bought a pound and a half of it when I got started on the setup.
The Hatchery is literally just a 2 litter bottle, air hose, cheap air pump, and some way to either suspend it or support it from the bottom. Check out youtube for some good vids and step by step instructions. |

| Dont know about salt but concerned with oil build up on top! What I used to fatten SA/CA/Texan Cichilds up for breeding was addition of clean, free of contaminants, Earthworm. Its FREE but need time to collect. Can culture your own so can use smaller sizes. All you need is pot filled w/soil and decaying leaves mixed in. Keep them moist and add few earthworm. I believe theyre hermaphrodites. Definitely should have extra filtration when erathworms are fed. Excellent food but dont use them as daily feeding. |

I don't know how safe it is for the shrimp but it states that they will just reproduce once they hatch. Best thing it was only $12! I'm thinking about getting one now just to treat my fish to some good snacks. I don't know much else about it though. |

| Ha ha thanks for the responses!
I have feed my fish worms in the past from our vegie gardens, but it's really dry here at the moment and they're way deep underground.. so I've kinda been fishing for ideas!
My cousin had a sea monkey set up, and honestly they die off quickly so there's never many in the tank.. but you might have more success! |

| Definitely a funny thread. Gees I’ve never even thought about feeding my fish leftovers. Wow would that ever be handy I could get rid of my Tupperware. Especially the ones I find at the back of the fridge and I’m scared to open. |

| A catfish would prolly eat anything you put into the tank. If you can catch then with rancid chicken liver among other horrible smelling things I can't imagine that ham or that mystery takeout you ordered last week would kill them. |

I might have to invest in a big dog, I've got the little fluffy snobs who turn their noses up at everything but the most expensive dog food on the market!
Thanks for the replys, this is a funny thread! |

I bought one of those hatcherys, it did well the first 2 times, after that non hatched. I bought eggs, but salty stuff I have no clue. lol
LFS said Kosher salt was ok, but didn't know how much to add. I'm not sure if this is true or not. |

| Around 4 tablespoons per litter. I have not worked out the math for 2.5 gallons. As to what kind of salt, I don't really think it matters. I use Instant Ocean but normal everyday table salt would work just as well. |

I use Kosher salt...no iodine, about enough to fill up my hand. So non-tech it's pathetic. They are reproducing very well. Go figure! I have no idea what I'm doing right. |
