My Tank Is Infected With Disease!!!

Okay, the cory disease (that only affects the dorsal fin) has spread to my swordtail(the red eye koi one) It has a tear in its dorsal fin with a white patch by the tear (its not fungus the fin is just discolored) what is happening dhould i medicate the tank? Will it have to cycle again after medicating?

white spot sounds like fin rot, i'd put a picture up to be sure though.

if it IS fin rot then treat with the jungle buddies tabs for fin rot, they've worked really well for me and haven't crashed my cycle, thankfully.

Is it only one spot?
If it's more, it may be ICH.

If you're not willing to d what's best for the fish, ans get them healthy - maybe it's best that you return them for now. If the fish is sick, then sometimes medications are the best way to treat them. If a mini-cycle happens, then it's something that everyone has to deal with.

it wont be a mini cycle it will completely wipe out the bacteria and ill have to wait another 4 bazillion minths for it to go back i am not allowed to medicate the tank anyways

Chase, that's really not fair to the fish if they're sick.

Then you have to do water changes. That's aprt of owning fish. You're creating an entire environment for them, unlike cats & dogs that can live with us.
I just medicated my tank for ich, and I just had to deal with the consequences of that.

Not all meds crash the cycle. Jungle tabs (that Alex recommended) won't, they're for fungus. If it's a bacterial infection there's Maracyn, Maracyn-2, Maracyn-TC (tetracycline), API's Furan-2...none of these will crash the cycle (I've used most of them and I can attest that what they say in the packages is correct). It's incredibly frustrating to have a sickness again after you've worked really hard to get your tank going (been there, hated that) but if it's only a few fish you may be able to just QT those and medicate them instead.

Quick and dirty quarantine setup

This is a really good link, you could probably obtain an entire setup for a minimal cost.

Still, if it works better to medicate your whole tank, I don't think you should worry too much about crashing your cycle, just monitor your water as you medicate and you should be fine.

i did a water change, changed the bio foam( it was overdue) and now the water is all cloudy with lil specks floating around everywhere.

You changed the filter media? If you changed the entire filter, you put yourself in a mini-cycle.

If the foam was dirty all you had to do was rinse it in the bucket containing tank water.

I also have the AquaClear 50 on my 20 gal. I use no carbon and have 1 foam and 2 bio-module packs in mine right now and/or you can do 2 foams and 1 bio-module. When I did the 2 foam thing I had to cut one down to be thinner so it would fit.

Like Amanda said, changing the foam just put you through a mini cycle chase. The bacteria live in the foam.

so i just rinse it every month for my entire life?
Chase J is offline
Old March 3rd, 2009

You rinse it once a week during water changes until it's literally falling apart. Then you replace the filter & hang the old one in a nylon stocking inside the tank for about a month until the new media gets established.
