Overstocked help

My best friend has a tank similar to mine. however he overstocked but noone in his house are experienced fish keepers. However i have my mom and bro.

his 20gallon freshwater community tank has 3 tiger barbs, 2 male guppies,4 rainbow furcatas (stay the size of neontetras), 5 neon tetras, 2 glolite tetras,1 dwarfgourami and 3 glodanios (zebra danios). His tank is ok but he always over feeds and this makes the water cloudy... do you think he has enough room for a few small shrimp to help cleen up the tank? any suggestions? ohh... p.s. he cant remove any fish b/c he shares it with his sister and she doesnt want to ( she is a devil )... thanks for the help

Just teach him the proper amount of food to feed, and make sure he does a WC every weekend. Education is the best tool.

Shrimp can be sensitive to water conditions. If the water parameters are good (0 ammonia, 0nitrites 5-10 nitrates) a few shrimp would help eat left over food.

i'd talk to him and see if he or his parents are willing to buy a bigger tank, he really needs to increase the number of tiger barbs to six but i wouldn't tell him to do so in that size tank. have you noticed if the neons, the glolights, and the danios are schooling together? if not then he needs to increase those schools too (again only tell him to do so if he gets a bigger tank).

tell him to only put in the amount of food that his fish can eat within a minute, and a water change with prime or stress coat + every week like amanda said.

you can also direct him to this site

i would try and convince his parents into a bigger tank. educating them in the situation may make their decision easier.

Their problem has been fixed... we took some of their fish and put them in our tank. now my mom and bro (very experienced fish keepers) can help them. so now my tank is what he has and he now has like 23 inches of fish. thankz for da help

I agree with Amanda. He will get allot more out of being convinced to keep a clean tank, vacuum gravel, do water chnages, and feed sparingly. 2 mouth fulls for each fish is my method. If you talk his parents into a bigger tank it may benefit you into talking your parents into a bigger tank, but he would have leaned nothing and he will end up with another overstocked tank.
Besides his tank is not that bed as zebra's and neon's are practically 1/2 inch eaters in my book fish.
